When you see teams like man city u21s losing to bradford and lincoln very comfortable in victory over Everton, you realise there is a huge problem in this country.Imo we sugercoat these players, 30 years ago most lads started work at 16 chucked into an adult environment, id do the same with young footballers, instead of hiding in these weak unagressive leagues, straight into adult football in tiers 5 6 or 7, let them get games under their belts.Mexican boxers start pro at 16 in some cases, imagine how hard that is.If man city are getting beat then change needs to happen, get them farmed out get them playing against men and give them the shovk of having to adapt, we have gone soft.

Isn't that the purpose of allowing the U21 sides enter the Checkatrade trophy?

Recent international successes at U17/19/21 level would suggest were doing something right, compared to other nations?

Agree with Sammy...recent international youth level success as below suggests at age group level against their peers we are producing good talented players :-

Posted Image

The issue after that is how these players progress into professional football afterwards. The majority are at big prem clubs where it normally ends up with them being loaned out left right and centre as the clubs prefer to buy proven talent rather than gamble on the young lads due to the pressure to succeed and win things. The loan system allows them to go out and play but the same issue sort of happens there, unless they are able to compete they will get overlooked in terms of more proven players as managers jobs are on the line to succeed so they cant let a lad get work experience in their side if they arent up to the job. You can potentially look at Louis Reed with us as an example....he is only going to get better by playing but as it stands many think he isnt good enough so shouldnt be in our side.

It used to be that players started in the lower leagues, progressed upwards if good enough then at the latter end of their careers drop down the leagues and pass on their knowledge.

Now with the inflated salaries they have, the domestic players retire at the top and the overseas players return home taking plenty out of our leagues and putting very little back in to the development of the sport.

Cheers for that did not know and watching now.Massive percentage of black players at this age group , proving imo that they develop or are more athletic in their youth

Dortmund pulled Sancho from the squad which is a shame but he came off their bench in the Bundesliga last weekend, hope he does well

Josh's McEachran's brother George playing + Phil Foden who's meant to be class

2-1, Brewster again

Are they black or mixed race if that's the right expression?

Brewster looks a real prospect as do a number of these kids especially Foden.

All this recent success suggests we are doing something right to produce the players at this level....the issue is now how do we keep them progressing so they go on to continue to succeed instead of being stuck playing U23 football behind some random foreigner the club has paid a fortune for.

Thanks for turning me on today...to the game. I was amazed how good England were, great individual skill, passing, movement and organisation. I reckon they'd even beat Town.

Arsenal shocked me last night by actually playing a young English keeper in their League Cup tie against Norwich instead of the usual imported keeper from some foreign country

We are producing the likes of Buckland and Pickford to challenge for the No1 England spot despite bringing in young keepers from overseas as though they are better than our homegrown keepers

30 years ago we used to laugh at the antics of some of the foreign keepers now they are signed by clubs here as a matter of course

England under 17 suggesting otherwise. Have you been watching this at all?

Looked very good technically rather than a group of athletes. Is it clubs or anything from st James park?

I went to Wembley on a free ticket some years ago for a youth game, might have been under 16s I think.

Good game, entertaining and all that - one player stood out as “quality” a CB called Ledley King.

Apparently at that time he was the only player not to have signed a contract with a club!!!

The game I saw today, was better, but I’d agree, I bet only 2 maybe 3 end up as top flight regulars
A new hope.
