attitudes spoken of here tell you why players like Onuwigun (not sure on spelling!) get on in the game for a while

clubs want athletes, not footballers

Few years ago now but I got released from town at 13 also for being too small. Can't report I developed into being a 6'2 lad but still..

In Cat 1 academies they have ways of finding out just how tall that player is going to be, certain measurement etc they know within a small approximation how big they'll get, no guesswork involved.

That is absolutely true.

They'll have to guess my lads height as I refused to give the necessary information required. He will succeed or fail based upon his ability and commitment as a player......and most definitely not due to his height.

If I remember rightly it was both parents heights, the boy's current height and the number of brothers and sisters.

The caveat to this is the goalkeeper, I think it's fair to say that height is a necessity

Yes id agree size is important in a keeper coupled with an ability to actually play football.I cant remember having to fill that in when my lad signed, perhaps its new but at 12 i was the smallest in my year but by 16 i was playing in mens leagues so i dont think theres any exact science.

Do we take it from that that he is a short house??!!

I've always been tall for my age group, unfortunately I've also always been crap.

If he was picked up at a Cat 1 academy I don't think you'd have much of a choice to be honest, it's a requirement taken upon signing onto an official trial to monitor growth spurts, the percentage they've grown already, their weight, everything.
Their diet is monitored too to give them best chance at fitness and recovery.
I personally think the small player thing is a load of boll.ocks to be honest as there have been some fantastic outfield players and goalkeepers that were not the English sized requisite, talent outweighs prejudice normally anyway.

He's slightly above average height wise for his age, so no he's not a short ar*e lol.

In my experience the information request has been just a request. I know others as well as myself who didn't supply the information.

I think it's a matter of principle as much as anything else. I am very much against the height obsession in football recruitment the UK, and should I supply the info requested then I am in effect perpetuating the nonsense.

I do testing etc in Academies across London and elsewhere - all players are tested anthropometricaly and physical tests.
If any player refused to be measured for height they would be out like a shot.
Not because the height mattered but it's a requirement for monitoring (growth etc).
Why would you not let him be measured??

It's not the in-house testing I was referring to, it was the request for further info relating to family. I believe it's name is linear regression analysis.

As I said, I'm against the way our nation is obsessed with physique relating to sport.

Some of my favourite players have been on the shorter side, Zola for one! But his ability was at a level only a fraction of players achieve, the trend for goalkeepers seems to be going one way when you look at the likes of courtois and De Gea they are extremely tall (though footwork/mobility is as important for a keeper not just being a unit) but in every position if you put two players of equal ability against each other but one significantly bigger and stronger then there's only one winner, in his peak look at Yaya Toure, sometimes it was like watching the big kid in the playground. When Chelsea were dominant under Mourinho in his first spell they were statistically the biggest team in the league, I look at Man City and they were similarly powerful... It's harder to find a Pirlo than it is a Fernandinho...

Spurs and Arsenal academy have an average height (in 4 age groups) that is shorter than the average for their age
