Compulsory Random Drugs Testing - British Politics

Hi Toby,
As a serving soldier for over 24 years I was obliged to undergo Compulsory Random Drug Tests.
As servicemen and women we were often in the position of making important decisions, some life and death, therefore a clear, sober mind was all important, particularly when handing weapons. I therefore always agreed with the policy of random drugs testing.
Recent events in the media have highlighted an instance of a member of the House of Lords actively taking cocaine which has lead him to resign his position as a police investigation commences.
A quick search on Google shows this is not an isolated incident among politicians which beggars belief. Politicians, as I am sure you will agree, are in a very privileged and trusted position. They are after all making important decisions on behalf of those who voted them in. The last thing the public should accept is drug taking within British politics.
As in all walks of life and all professions drug taking is a reflection of society and it is inevitable that people in positions of trust could at some point become involved in it. It was the same when I was in the Army. However in the Army we were tested and if we were found to be taking drugs then an Administrative discharge was the course of action taken. In my 24 years service, I only ever knew of 4 people found guilty of taking drugs and getting discharged therefore it did act as a deterrent.
How would you feel about random drug testing of British politicians? I dont know if it happens in any other public service i.e. the Police, Fire Service etc but if it does, then surely those who run our country should under go random tests too?
Your views would be appreciated.
Best regards

Edit: Why not start a petition on change.org? The time is right to gather support for this idea, and if it gets over 100k signatures I think Parliament have to debate the subject.

I would start a petition if I knew how.

In my current employment we are subjected to annual testing, as well random "on the spot" testing. A minimum of 10% have to be tested randomly through the year. Also, any safety incident immediately requires all staff involved to be tested within 24 hrs.
It would be interesting to see a reply, should you get one - but then again, if the recent expenses and second homes scandals, as well as reports about high profile paedophiles in the chamber being protected are anything to go by, I wouldn't expect anything from your letter/email

It's an electronic petition- just go to
https://www.change.o...tart-a-petition
...and it will take you through, step by step. It's easy enough to do, and free. Random drug testing for MPs seems a worthwhile idea to me.

Without wishing to sound stupid, surely the reason for sending the email was in the actual email?

I dunno, I'm on the fence about this one. There are some drugs Im not sure should be illegal, in fact looking at things in the most objective way I can, as someone who drinks heavily most Saturdays I think alcohol should be made illegal ahead of certain drugs (obviously this wouldn't work at all in practice).

Personally, I believe that getting yourself honey trapped by a newspaper isn't much of a deterrent.
Pretty much the response you'd expect from a politician I suppose.
Oh well, I did try...
