  1. Let The Game Live

    21 December 2023 - 10:55 AM

Came across this on YouTube. I found it quite an insight into the world of VAR and refereeing. I enjoyed it and I hope all others that view it do too.

  4. Southend Game Watch

    13 November 2023 - 04:26 PM

I can't make it to Southend on Saturday but I've heard a little rumour today that the club are considering opening the lounges and showing Saturdays game in there. I haven't seen it officially anywhere it's just what I've been told. Can anyone confirm if they've heard similar and if there's any truth in it please? Thanks.
  5. Remembering Games For Being A Lucky Day

    22 September 2023 - 05:03 PM

I've never been what you might call a big gambler but back in my late teens I had a spell where I liked a little flutter. I was wondering if anyone can recall certain matches through having a good beat the bookies day or just a really lucky day in general? One game in particular I remember well was when I travelled down to Watford in April 1975 for an old division 3 league game. The day started off really well as my mate and I arrived in Watford and we were taking a walk around the ground and as we passed by the players entrance wearing our blue and white town scarves we heard a shout of hello Spireites. We turned around to see Ernie Moss and Andy Kowalski stood there. They both came over to us and thanked us for travelling there to support them and then they handed us complimentary tickets for the game. Really good of them and a freebie to watch the match. I thought that's a great start to the day.
We then came across Watford's social club and we asked the doorman if we were allowed in for a drink. You can come in on two conditions he said,
1, You take those blue and white scarves off and leave them here with me until you leave and,
2, You pay and have a go on this football scratch card I've got here.
It was one of those cards where you wrote your name under one of around 30 football teams on a card and when the card was full a panel was scratched off revealing the winning team and the winner got a percentage of the takings. We agreed and we were allowed in. After what must have been around half an hour and still on my first pint because it was flat and warm and tasted like weedkiller a bell was rung behind the bar and the scratchcard winner was revealed. Chester City was announced and as when I made my choice Chesterfield wasn't an option I went for the nearest team that sounded like us. I quickly pocketed my winnings and as I was losing the will to live because of the endless Elton John songs from the jukebox and the terrible beer we left picking our scarves up on the way out.
It was also Grand National day that particular day and I had placed an each way bet on three horses before I left home. I had chosen L'Escargot, Red Rum and Spanish Steps. During the match the P.A. system sprang into life and the announcer gave the result of the race,
    First place, L'Escargot,
    Second place, Red Rum,
    Third place, Spanish Steps.
What a day I was having. I arrived back home that evening and called in the local shop to buy a Green'un for the days football results ( our local newsagent used to stay open late on Saturdays for the sale of the Green'un in those days ) only to find my fixed odds bet had clocked in too. I'd predicted 8 home wins and they had all won. How lucky was I that day? Please don't ask how lucky I've been since as I've won the equivalent of B****R all on anything ever since lol.
Has anyone else ever had a lucky day like that and vividly remembered the day at the match because of it I wonder?
