If everyone with an opinion says that Bellingham should drop back so Foden can play centrally, how is it even possible that Southgate sees it differently? We aren?t just talking rent a gobs on the radio and in the pub, this is everyone from pundits to ex international players the world over.

That?s the dream decision on paper but I don?t think Bellingham has it in him to be making box to box runs all game, he doesn?t look overly fit, has had a long season and has played as an attacking mid or false 9 for Madrid all season. The answer is benching Foden for Gordon and using the former as an impact sub. It?s hard to stomach because of how Foden plays for City but he?s barely put in a good England performance to date.

The obvious solution to England's problems (i.e. qualifying for the next round after two games), is to sack GS immediately, and appoint any one of the experts on here who have explained how they could win the tournament. Or, alternatively, we could just wait and see what actually happens in the next two games (in real life as opposed to our own experts' fantasies).

Ivory Coast sacked their manager in the middle of AFCON and ended up winning it so you might be on to something there. Being serious, I don?t expect us to win it but I?d like us to try and put something approaching a coherent playing style together. I don?t think that?s much to ask bearing in mind these are this country?s cream of the crop.

I didn?t realise Gordon was right footed and saka left footed, no wonder we win nothing? screw you southgate

That's not a problem though, Gordon plays on the left from Newcastle and can cross with his left, Saka plays on the right for Arsenal and can cross with his right plus is England's second most productive player after Kane.

Shoehorning Foden on the left for what's likely going to be at least 3 matches if he starts there tonight is Paul Scholes on the left all over again. Trying to get our best players to play in a system which doesn't suit them has been done before, unsuccessfully, time and time again. So frustrating.

I'm not a big watcher of the premier league so you'll probably know better than me, but surely we have a decent left back other than an unfit Shaw.

Chilwell has had an awful season, Southgate would've faced a lot of criticism if he'd brought him but I would've preferred him over Trippier if we're sticking with Foden on the left because at least he would've overlapped. However my pick would've been Mitchell from Palace, he didn't do brilliantly in his last England appearance but he's a natural left footer, solid defensively and has the capability to overlap, plus plays with Guehi next to him at club level. No brainer for me.

Think its pretty clear from this thread to date that a lot of folk had made their up long before any performances etc in this tournament. They are well down the lane of if we win its in spite of him and if we lose its his fault. While i've questioned a few things he's done so far in this tournament i do think as well he has been let down by some players who are playing well below what they are capable of.

I?d made my mind up on Dean Saunders before he managed his first game for us. Doesn?t necessarily make people wrong for having that view. Previously I thought people had been too harsh on Southgate, now the scales have fallen from my eyes. Tactically he is a League 1 manager, he has a wealth of world-class attacking option at his disposal and is making them look turgid and uncreative. What is our actual game plan? Why are our central midfielders sat on our centre halves? toes? Why is Trent in CM when we have little pace up front to hit with his typically excellent balls over the top? In fact, why is Trent in midfield at all? We are experimenting in central midfield two games deep into a tournament. We brought an injured left back and stuck a right back at left back who has no intention of overlapping with Foden in front of him who wants to be in the middle of the pitch. These things cant solely be attributed to poor player performance, these are basic tactical failings. Southgate and his staff have an almost endless amount of time to think about how we are going to line up, how we are going to play, how the opposition are likely going to line up etc and this has resulted in the two performances we?ve seen thus far which have been dire.
