I've never heard of him but that means nothing. First choice with Horton to compete is presumably the plan.

If nothing more I assume Cook sees him as an upgrade on Clements so are we to expect an upgrade on King to come?

if clucas signs it will suggest he?s been signed for midfield or as an attacker.
If he doesn?t sign it surely suggests he was being looked at as a left back which is a spot now occupied by Gordon

And, the sum total of those words of wisdom is based on nothing else but speculation.

I?m absolutely not denying that tactics plays its part, it absolutely does, but it?s not ALL tactics as some believe. You have to look at the players and questions whether they have the skill set to make the right decisions at the right time in order to effectively execute whatever tactics are deployed in the game. I?ve seen enough of the games last season - home and away games - to give me confidence that none of the current crop of defenders will reduce their errors, and in fact against better opposition will potentially increase their decision making errors at critical points in a game which will lead to increased opportunities for the opposition to score. As you say it?s not just about tactics, it?s also about players. I?m arguing the same.

Every player makes mistakes no matter how high up the pyramid they play in.

However, if a player is not given any cover then every mistake is likely to be punished that is basically why when a keeper makes a mistake the ball ends up in the net. Last season our CBs were not given any cover as our FBs were playing as wingers more often than not. As such, if a team plays with more of a flat back 4 or even a back 3 then the extra defenders are there to cover for each other. Some of the teams that let less goals in than us last season did not have better defenders than us they just kept more of them back.

Is it not possible that our CBs were actually under added pressure last season because they were playing in the knowledge that if they made a mistake it was likely to be punished? As such, could they be more comfortable playing in a more defensively sound formation?

When we did so well during Cook's first spell, Ryan and Morsy were superb in their defensive work. Only Jones among the current crop of defensive midfielders really does that- Oldaker offers no defensive resistance, nor does Banks if he plays there. Naylor does to an extent but is more of a forward-thinking up-and-down type midfielder. Defending isn't Akinola's strong suit either, from what I've seen, though he does offer good drive forward from deep.
So, getting another Mike Jones type in, or training Akinola up to play that role, alongside Naylor could be very beneficial. Or indeed keeping Mike Jones ticking over.

Yet, I see Akinola as more of a defensive midfielder than attacking one. He likes a tackle and, yes, he can drive forward with the ball but in his last spell with us he never bulged the net and rarely provided an assist. Positional sense and anticipating danger are part of Jones game and perhaps these are the key areas that Akinola needs to improve in.

We only have one more slot to fill in respect of our maximum 22 man outfield squad. For me, we have probably got too many players for the 5 positions behind the lone striker but not enough for the 4 in front of the keeper. I still have a feeling that Freckleton will return to cover both LB and LCB and I wonder if we might sign another U21 player to do similar on the right side.

Other than that, I do wonder if we are getting to the ?one in? for ?one out? stage other than the signing of another keeper which, of course, could still be Tyrer.

You might be wanting to take a look at the goals conceded against the top 6-7 sides. We shipped quite a few goals against them.

I prefer to look at the number of goals we scored during the season. I believe we scored more than any other team in the league. I also believe we had a better goal difference than any other team in the league.

So, yes, we may have conceded more goals than we would have liked but, tactically, we were set up to score plenty of goals and leave our 2 CBs isolated and exposed to counter attacks.

Cook has said he knows we have to tighten up defensively in the coming season. Whilst this might be addressed with personnel it, no doubt, will be addressed tactically as well. There are very few CB pairings that would have coped with our open plan defensive set up last season. It should be borne in mind that even Jones found himself no longer having nose bleeds when finding himself on the edge of our oppositions penalty area.

Whilst I?m expecting further additions to the squad I am also expecting Grimes to start the season as one of our CBs.

Thanks for talking about the team and the football. It seems to be the last thing most of them are interested in, but 'twas ever thus.
Look forward to some more interesting discussions it the mods get a bit more selective about relevance in threads.
