For the size of the city and fan bases are both dee dah's the most unsuccessful clubs in history? They had success before any of us can remember or most of us were a twinkle, especially Wednesday, but by my calculation one trophy between them since before the war, some finals and semi finals and plenty of promotions (and relegations). For the alleged size of the clubs its shameful. Utd also have the honour of being (along with Wolves) probably the biggest club ever to fall into the fourth tier (and Wed nearly did). Even Derby and Forest have had more success in that time.
I have also noticed we seldom seem to win when they do, fortunately they don't win very often. Not one between them thus far this season.
Long may their 'success' continue!

Surely that goes to Bristol?

Two teams, population not far off half a million. Bristol city honours list isn’t much better than ours. Champions of the old second division and fa cup runners up. The rest is, like us, regional div 3 Anglo Scottish cup and FL trophy. Bristol rovers worse than ours.

I must admit though, the premier league and championship table did bring a smile.
A new hope.

Agree, but Bristol isn’t as big as Sheffield, nor do they have the fan base nor tradition. After all football was invented in Sheffield so they keep reminding us!

Both United and Wednesday had very good teams in the 60's and 70's but seemed to decline at the same time as the city did, for some reason.

Both had good teams. I wouldn’t say very good as they weren’t good enough to win owt. Utd had a really decent team with Currie, Woodward, Salmons etc around 71 but didn’t last more than a year or so. Similarly Wed had a good but not great team in the early 90’s with Sheridan, Waddle, Hurst etc. Certainly not had anything near that since.

Wednesday were in the title hunt in the early 90s then made both cup finals the following year i think it was. They had a very good side with Hirst etc. Hirst was a cracking striker and had it not been for the amount of times he got kicked up in the air by Steve Bould and Tony Adams he would have had an even better career. Man Utd made a british record bid for him that was turned down and his one England start coincided with England being crap, he was hauled off at half time for Shearer and never got a look in again.

I think it went something along the lines of,

I never felt more like singing the blues,
Spireites win and Wednesday lose,
Oh Spireites,
You've got me singing the blues.

As an aside that song has brought to mind a funny thing that happened to me in Cyprus in 2005. I was in a bar and they had karaoke on and I was wearing that seasons away shirt. It was the TFG burgandy and white one with the VK sponsors logo on it. I was sitting there drinking my Keo when I heard someone announce " This one's for that Spireite sitting over there " and he was pointing straight at me. He then sang Singing the blues by Guy Mitchell. After he had finished he came over and we started chatting. I didn't know him and he didn't know me but during the course of our chat it emerged he lived in Newbold and he was only the nephew of my best man when I got married. If I hadn't been wearing a town shirt that evening we both would have been none the wiser. That's what you get when you wear a Chesterfield shirt in Cyprus lol.

Some say wednesdays downfall started when trevor francis was sacked as manager, a very un-popular decession at the time. Mind still there last major trophy (the league cup) was far more recent than Newcastle, not won anything since the 60s now!

I would assume that the roads around Hillsborough will be busy with Wednesday fans making an early dash to the nearest pub 😆.
