It is a shame that Ernie’s tribulations over the last few years have gone relatively unnoticed compared to equally tragic cases and I assume his death will too.

Well it will be marked around here at least

Sad news, seems to be a few ex footballers of his era getting dementia, parkinsons etc. It will be a sign of relief for his family though, ive got a relation through marriage with dementia and she is just existing, does not know what day it is

Rest in Peace Ernie.

As a young Spireite I feel indebted to have met and chatted to one of the greatest legends this club will ever see, and what a great bloke to boot. Thoughts go out to his family.

I just hope with the footballs collecting less water and being easier to head nowadays we'll see fewer sad stories like this in the years to come.
I just don't know what I'm supposed to be

In the early days they were case balls weren't they? if got wet it could almost knock you out.

Ernie's death was mentioned in the Guardian today. A welcome surprise.

Saw him in his second and third spells at town, under Cox and then Duncan

Used to buy boots etc from moss and millers just to be in the same room as the great man.

A sad day for any spireite. A very sad day for his family.
A new hope.

My Dad who sadly passed away last year loved Ernie and I will never forget a story he told me

It was a horrible wet cold Misty November Tuesday night at Saltergate the pitch was already heavy after a few days rain and Ernie was mam marked by a brute of a centre half who found great pleasure in knocking the great man to the floor at every given opportunity

It was deep into injury time kicking towards the kip moments left and once again Ernie near the corner flag got taken out by the centre half the ref gave us a free kick dad said out of pity and Ernie struggled to get off the floor, face splattered with mud shirt soaking wet

Dad said he could hardly walk into the penalty area hands in knees he was knackered …

The cross came in and out of the night sky from nowhere Ernie soared above everyone and crashed a bullet header into the net!!!!

Saltergate erupted and the legend was mobbed he just took it all in his stride

What a player he was 💙

Ernie, Ernie, Ernie 💙8💙

Very sad news. Condolences to Jen, Nikki and Sarah and all his family including his very close football family. Watched Ernie come through the NIL team, his debut and many many games leading our line. Although the Mansfield era was a bit painful, especially lining up again with Kev Randall! Got to know him well in his later life. Lovely chap.
Note both John Ridley (68) and Keith Stott (68) were amongst others who died with a form of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

RIP Ernie

The memories you created from your debut at BPA are uncountable but the memory of your overhead kick goal in front of a packed Railway End at Millmoor will remain.

Thanks for bringing many a happy moment.

Sad news hearing Ernie has gone, I saw him many times during the 60s and 70s when my dad used to take me to Saltergate, I was in awe of this tall bloke who always looked awkward when running but was so deadly in the box. I played a bit in my teens and hated playing in wet weather with the heavy leather balls, theres no wonder a number of footballers of that era have had some sort of brain trauma.
He joins another prolific scorer, Kevin Randall, between them they'll be scoing for fun up there.RIP Ernie you'll be missed.

we saw we came we conquered!

A real gentleman who had a great connection with all who had the pleasure of coming in to contact with him. The stories and memories show what a beloved figure Ernie is and how much of a gap his passing will leave in the life's of many.

He will always be respected and loved at Causeway Lane and our hearts go out to Ernie's friends, family and former clubs at this most heartbreaking of times.

Rest easy Gaffer #ErnieMossIsMagic
