He lacks physicality and he?s still learning the game but pace is not a problem

I am not a fan of Freckleton. That said I think we will re-sign him to play left back and as cover for Grimes.

Must be a different bloke I saw deputise for Grimes against Watford then, and as for no pace, I think he was one of the fastest in the squad. He's work in progress but he's a ball playing centre back with a left foot, so consequently worth lots of cash if we can develop him. If, as I've been told, he isn't getting another contract at Sheffield United, he could cover both defensive positions on the left. He wouldn't be in the first eleven but a very good player to have on the bench.
We need players we can improve, while doing a job for us and then sell on at a profit.

Haven?t the Blunts published their full retained list yet?

Freckleton certainly doesn?t lack pace. He has it in abundance. Possibly because of his age he lacks physicality and from time to time struggles to find a teammate with his passing. Comparing him to Maguire isn?t the answer either because Loz has never had the same pace and, strangely, at the age of 20 lacked experience too.

So, coming back to his age. It is a big advantage as because of it Freckleton would not count as one of our 22 outfield players as he is under 21. Personally, if Grimes is going to be our captain next season that suggests he?s going to play if fit. As such, Freckleton would be a useful addition as he can also cover the LB position and is another young player we can improve.

At RB, though, I think we need a more experienced player to be the more regular starter.

I know we didn't see a great deal of him a LCB, but when he did play there he looked like a prospect. The criticism of him comes from when he covered at LB and I think we'd have a higher opinion of him if we had the chance to judge him in his preferred position more. In principle, I'd be more than happy if he came back on loan given he doesn't eat into the squad limit but we just seem to have a lot of loose ends and bits and pieces in the backline. If we end up getting 2 absolute first choicer CBs (let alone at full back) I'm worried we'll end up with far too many "good as cover" defenders in the squad.

Completely agree. Freckleton is quick and skilful, and is capable of operating very well in a back four. I think, once he has eliminated his tendency to 'switch off' at times, he will become a very good left-sided CB or LB. At his age, he is a sensible addition to the squad.

I?m perhaps on my own but I?m not sure Freckleton is the answer to anything.

I?ve seen nothing to suggest he could strengthen the CB position, and it?s most definitely a position that needs improving not padding out with numbers.

And the suggestion he can fill in at LB is worrying, IMO. He?s not a LB in a million years and to have him covering there at all would see us vulnerable.

I?ve got nothing against the lad but I don?t feel he?s the answer.

Just for clarity, they're the only ones you rate good enough to help get us out of L2?

Their season hasn't finished yet! They've got one more game to go today.

Fair comment.

Another point on signings is that we have to work within a budget and the rules of the EFL.

Not every single player has to, or will, be in the match day squad as first choice.

Until we lose a match and then each one of those players will have their own thread started by you claiming that they need bouncing out.

This will 100% happen 😂 probably if we dont stick 20 past Matlock in preseason AND each of them score a hattrick!

Reece James has been released by Sheff Wed. Local, played for Cooky before and a left back. Ticks some boxes.
