Heard the expression loads of times. I suspect it is mainly used in golfing circles. It means keep the ball in a useful area, ie not hoofing it into Sheffield Road.

If the ball is on the island, do we have a boat?
There's no shortage of idle trawlers at the moment. Where's Cantona when you need him?

Never heard of it in golf, not even from Wayne Riley, who has some gems, Quote of the day yesterday was ‘it landed like a butterfly with sore feet’.

What does that mean?
I would presume the pitch itself is the island, so basically he means keeping the ball in play and on the floor ..
My take on it anyway

They say it at our bowling club when someone sends a really wide one.
Crown Green bowling = keeping the ball on the island?
Yes that'd make sense!

Wor about this then, from their manager??
“They used the bottom of their box to make passes better than what we did.”

I can see that one as meaning we played more passes across our own penalty area which then led to opening up parts of the pitch that they weren't covering thus causing their defence trouble

With respect to their manager, unlike a few others who have played against us, there didn't seem to be any sour grapes about our win and he acknowledged that in certain areas we were better than his team.

Management-speak - every trade suffers from it and very few managers can resist sounding trendy. Does no harm, most of the time.
Football seems more prone to it than most though: probably down to the telly. When you've got to find 20 minutes of cliche to pad out Match of the Day, you have to invent something that sounds cool.
