Definitely seems racist.
I’d have taken it as so I think

Genuinely don’t know. I guess it was me to put the name on it. Tbh it just meant we spent our money elsewhere.

All said without agenda btw, I’m just interested.

We .3 white blokes, various ages, all non threatening looking or acting , went to a restaurant recommended to us. I love Indian food, cooking and eating, but not always the Westernised version so said we’d go. For disclosure the restaurant was in the Bradford area, and specifically where White ethnicity was the minority. We went in , knew there was no booze, respected that and tried to order. The reception was frosty when we asked for a menu in English. It was a genuine request.

The owner went off on one speaking a language we couldn’t understand but obviously angry. The staff eventually told us to leave. As I say we were conservatively dressed, well mannered and as far away from threatening as there could be. Hostile to the point of taking our coats, throwing them outside and crowding and shouting at us and pushing us out forcibly.

Another customer followed us, apologised for “the racism” (their words) and said not all people in Bradford think that way (don’t worry we didn’t think they did!). We asked him what he’d said and it was centred around our colour, appearance and apparent “privilege”. “White” was used lots of times apparently.

We just wanted some good food. We laugh about it now but it was definitely hostile.

Was it racist? Or attacking our privilege? If the latter why focus on white?

As I say it was one of the customers who said it was racism. We just thought the owner was a “insert non racist insult “.

The world is full of folk who get offended on other folks' behalf.

I think the owner was offended 'cos you couldn't be assed to try to order in their language so demanded that you leave. A recipe for a short career as a restauranteur but hey ho, it's his business.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

If that happens the other way around the business is reported and the owner ends up in court ( and rightly so)

An Indian walks in to an English restaurant and the owner ends up in court 'cos he doesn't have a menu printed in Hindi?

Having recently been on an E, D & I course they are perfectly entitled to. But I get what you mean.

So it was my fault? “Assed to try”? We asked for a menu tbf…. I really think you miss the hostility.

No, for racist language and throwing their coats out of the door, refusing to serve and forcing them out of the door and general threatening behaviour

Equality Act 2010. Protected characteristics.

'It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of: ..race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin..'

As to whether they did or didn't, I obviously don't know.

You’re ignoring the part where the other customer, who seemingly understood what was being said and in what context, felt the language and behaviour constituted racism towards the white customers?

Replace you and mates with three black blokes, then Bradford with somewhere deep south Yanksville, and there'd be no question of racism.

Which is what this clearly was...

It was years ago. And if I could remember what would it achieve? Might not even exist anymore. I hope not.

Ah ok, I misunderstood, thought it was recent

To be fair though, that’s the sort of welcome you get in restaurants in France

It was racist and out of order. Bad enough if it happened abroad but for it happen here is outrageous really.
