Of course after that's over and they set up a kick around.... the question has to be "who's going in goal?"

According to Rico Pre-Season training needs to be a lot more than long runs!

What's the word on Dan Whatsize? Anyone seen him play for the cubs team? Obviously most folks want to see an experienced guy in goals ... preferably someone who has turned down Championship/Premiership teams to come to Saltergate by some of the stuff that's been written!!!! BUT can anyone who HAS seen him play comment on the lad's potential?

the club have given him a pro contract so he must have potential.

I've seen him once - first youth team game v. Donny last season. 1-1 draw in which he played very well even when carrying an injury in the second half. Big lad and the club must think he has a chance.

He's big and mobile but his handling occasionally has teflon features and his decision making will need to improve with experience.
His size is a big plus but, on the whole, I think it will be a big ask for him to be ready for regular league action by the end of his first year as a pro.

I saw him play a couple of times last season, and thought he had a lot of potential. He is big and confident, and pretty agile for his size. His positioning and anticipation seemed fine (saw him save a pen), and he appeared to be assertive when communicating with team - mates. Having said all that, nobody can expect a lad with his lack of experience to jump straight in as a regular first team keeper. We need an experienced bloke to play most games, whilst bringing Dan in now and again to gain experience.

I'll second that. I'd like to see an experienced reliable keeper with Dan as back-up. We didnt need 2 more keepers - if we had 2 in front of Dan he would never get a game in the first team, and what would have been the point of having a young keeper that is never tested?

If he is good enough then experience wont matter too much, although obviously it helps a great deal.
As you have seen him,and I have not, can you answer the following=
What was he like on 1 to 1 situations?
How well did `command` his area?
Did he stand out? (Youth team isnt first team pro footy.)

Jamie Jackson looked good in Youth Football and wheres he now?
Dan needs a few years being the no2 to a decent goalie and then he might have a chance, lets not rush the lad in and ruin him.
