He took a lot of unnecessary stick, but always played with pride and enthusiasm. I had a lot of arguments on the kop with the "moaners", but boy did I enjoy it when he scored the championship winning goal against Peterborough 69/70.
Thanks for the memories Tony.
Yorkshire is Yorkshire
Never the twain shall meet.

So true. It took a long time for him to be accepted and I'm not sure he ever really was. Mostly unjustified, I always thought that the boo boys affected his career. RIP Tony.

Just part and parcel of football, nothing changes everyone has an opinion but scapegoats always appear each and every season. God bless and condolenses to his family.

That is what football is really about, memories of the very few really good times.

Was the number 7 for Town in first professional game I ever saw ... much maligned as I recall
I do remember one obese bloke in the Cross Street wing stand who abused him ( and Geoff Martin ) EVERY game
Also Tony , terrific goal v Lincoln at home ( 4-0 ) win circa January 1970

Scored from the right wing into the Cross Street end goal if I recall correctly.
RIP Tony and thanks for the memories.
Condolences to his family and friends.

Yes he was number 7 when I started watching town and got a fair amount of stick. I think his mother used to sit near us, either that or someone very vociferous sticking up for him. The only thing to say in his defence is that if Jimmy McGuigan picked him every week he couldn't have been that bad.

As you say Being picked to play by Jim McGuigan is the best tribute to be paid to him
The best manager imo to manage the town in my lifetime certainly did not suffer fools gladly

The coaching staff used to tell my Dad that Tony was unplayable in training and practice games, hence their patience with him. He did at times seem to lose all confidence once he crossed that white line; although the 69-70 season was his saving grace.
RIP Tony, too soon lad.
