If we go back to the old European Cup format it is possible that Chelsea will play only two European matches next season rather than the six they are guaranteed. That is the only reason it was changed.

Liverpool being allowed in is a bit of a double edged sword! They now have six matches to play before they potentially reach the league stage. They will not get the money guaranteed to the other four English teams (although those four have also lost some of their money) and Liverpool will have to cancel their far-east tour and a couple of high-profile friendlies as they are hoping to play second and third-round qualifiers.

The Merseyside outfit might even lose money on this decision!

Which do you think they value more highly, the honour of being able to defend their title of champions of europe or the filthy moola that is now synonymous with the competition?

They get paid more than enough to play these extra games.

My only concern is that come this time next year (World Cup), players like Gerrard and Carragher might be suffering from burn-out, so it wouldn't upset me if they made an early exit from Europe.

Wouldn't it have been ironic if Liverpool got the place instead of Everton after Everton were denied the chance to take one of their best ever teams into Europe in the 1980s due to the incidents blamed on Liverpool fans the year before!
