The silence is pretty deafening, we all know what is coming

As someone who uses the rail network every week, it's a shambles and an embarrassment compared to most of Europe and even parts of Asia.

Agreed, but is the solution throwing lots of money at one new line or spending the same amount improving lots of lines?

I was led to believe that HS2 was less for the extra speed and more for the extra capacity so they could then start fixed the east coast line and the midlands route.

Stopping at Broad Oak would be even more ridiculous given how much they must have already spent extending the footprint at Euston to accommodate..

That's GeeBeebies, but the far more professional Sky News are saying it's a gonner.

And what better metaphor for thirteen years of tory rule - a line to nowhere.

It’s only worth building if you build all of it. Build all of it and you could be from Canary Wharf or Heathrow to Manchester in two hours - A link from Birmingham to London is Going to cost billions and return very little - it would only save 15-20 mins. And if it only goes as far as Old Oak Common and not Euston then by the time you’ve transferred onto another line you have saved no travel time at all - making it utterly and totally pointless.

I think if this is announced, then the phrase “cutting your losses” would be apt- mothball the project and spend it up grading east/west rail links.
A new hope.

The fact is morocco and countries like them have half a dozen high speed lines the uk has 1 sure points to a need for more, save journey times a little but more for extra capacity for freight and local services but surely the line will have to reach euston otherise folk will just continue to use the existing birmingham to london service as it takes them straight to euston. Bulk of uk rail still has victorian infastructure and folk dont want high speed lines. to all those pro labour supporters on here, alot of torys are also deeply against it been scrapped

Spot on

We’ve a railway that is based on Victorian infrastructure, but demand 21st century performance while trying to impose 1980’s Thatcherite financial controls m

Perhaps before using Morocco has an example you should consider the geography
Derbyshire is Derbyshire
Yorkshire is Yorkshire

Never the twain shall meet.

The key question is why over £100bn when original cost stated as 35 billion or thereabouts? I suspect it's like the PPE scandal - Tory mates, inflated contracts etc.
This really has made us a laughing stock, not only in our own country but elsewhere. Seven Bins Sunak said he would be spending some of the money on pot holes instead.

Back on BR days, they were given a budget and they got it done - unlike all this political medalling from people who have been educated beyond their intelligence.

This is the govt that gave us value for money SMART motorways and look at the mess that's created.
Too much ego and not enough get on with it

Well the scrapping of the Newton spur on the Birmingham-Leeds Northern Route cost me £15k.
