second answer down probably is a fair response
"What's the point of praying when you know your team's going to lose"

How naive of you. When this happens, a prayer tug-of-war occurs. The person who has accrued the most God points over their life wins the encounter, and their prayer is the one which happens. The loser's prayer is instantly discarded and they are sent to hell cos God is eternally forgiving but simultaneously a bit of a knob jockey.

I quite like the FB meme with a picture of God deciding whether or not to cure some poor kid's illness based on the number of 'likes' he's received.

As an Atheist I won't bother praying but hope they do too. My fear is that the players haven't got the talent to do anything about saving the team.

I would like to refine your argument if I may
I also think all these god points from people praying are aggregated together. There is strong evidence to support this, for example, Man United are more successful than Chesterfield. This doesn't mean that Man Utd fans are better human beings than us, just that there is more of them.
I think the same goes with peoples pre game superstitions not always working. There are others on the other side with more and better superstitions.
There is clear empirical evidence to suggest both theories are valid and that they are not just valid for football

That explains it all. Astra must be rubbish at Tug-of-wars.
Though the way we are playing currently we may very well witness the second coming of Jesus before Town win a league game again.

I have to take offence here. As a fervent discipline of knob jockeys, how dare you equate them with that God character!
