Contacts

When prospective managers were mentioned there was always talk about the contacts they would have
Load of nonsense!
Everyone who has worked in football for any length of time will have 'contacts'
Caldwell has contacts, Cook had contacts, Saunders had contacts, Wilson probably had the most contacts of anyone due to being in football for so long - it's a stupid thing to bring up - who's to say a manager goes exclusively to people he knows to get players in anyway
It's not about the contacts people have it's what players they can get and how they get them playing
Saying a person in football has contacts is similar to saying a person in football has a head!

Dunno.... even though Swindon have employed a clown like Tim Sherwood he has been able to pull out some decent-looking loan deals, no doubt due to the old pals' act.
It depends on the manager, of course. Saunders knew loads of washed-up old duffers who were no use to him (Souness etc) and he couldn't be bothered to use his 'contacts' beyond giving fat contracts to crocks he knew about from past exploits. He was probably even sold a pup by one of his contacts Pulis when taking on Jack Fitzwater and Liam O'Neill. Cook's contacts were lower-profile but more useful as his scouting knowledge brought in the likes of Ryan, Morsy, Gardner etc, and I guess Roberts was encouraged to join via his personal relationship with Cook too.

Was this not more Mitchell than Cook?

That's my point
They all had contacts
It's what they do with them that counts
And simply saying Caldwell has contacts is a nonsense

He did but if stories were to be believed Saunders ignored a couple of Mitchell's recommendations who went on to sign for other sides....Chettle from Ilkeston was one i think but could be wrong.

A good example of having 'contacts', or people on the staff with them, and being too lazy to use them. One of the key differences between Cook and Saunders.

Signed for Peterborough in the end, if you consider them a bigger club, but i believe Mitchell recommended him to Saunders before that and we declined the chance to sign him...or something along those lines. Sure it was all on here back when it happened.

I'm sure he first came to the clubs attention as he was a Full Contact player

Exactly. I'd like to know what deal, if any, we have with Full Contact. Seems to have done Ilkeston FC some harm, getting involved with them- even when an ex-player of theirs (Che Adams) supposedly had a sell-on, him getting transferred for good money nearly sent Ilson out of business.
