I thought that the difference in costs was not significant. I was left with the impression that Terry Ward wants them as does Phil Taylor. I suggested that a landmark design might count as an art installation or that it might generate independent sponsorship.

How about small mini arches, ie diagonal corner to corner, arch supports with spot lights hanging off them....
That would be very original

floodlights curved to replicate the crooked spire,is a truely great idea, and would give the stadium true identity

Pete,
TW mentioned about the floodlights and their corner location as opposed to them being on the roof of the stands. He also mentioned about expanding the stadium in years to come by filling in the corners. Am I right in assuming that the floodlights would need to be scrapped and replaced with roof lighting if we did go down the route of filling in the corners?
I like the look of the curved lights, but surely there's a long term cost of having them, is there not?

In the cold light of day, the likelihood of ever needing to extend the stadium is miniscule. I know we like to puff our chests out and dream of a glorious future, but we're kidding ourselves - the floodlight pylons, twisted or otherwise, will not need replacing.

TWISTED - now theres a good word! Being a designer of sorts myself I'm not to sure on curved floodlights as the ground squareness dosn't lend itself to curved lights, a bowl shaped ground would have done so. Twisted with a slight inward curve to mimic the spire would work and would be a great landmark as the spire itself, they would also always remain a total one off! As ever though, these things always come down to cost.

I remember when floodlights were mentioned before and I think it was Dalekpete (apologies if it wasn't) who said that we couldn't have floodlights along the roofs because the roofs were too low.
Fair enough
Then in the presentation on the main-site Mr Ward says that 4 floodlights are being built as a nod towards Saltergate and that it would provide a beacon/focal point on the dark nights and dark winter dates. He suggests a concious decision was made to have standing floodlights rather than rooflights...he suggests that rooflights were a possibility.
Methinks that Mr Ward is using the "saltergate" angle as an excuse for having to build standing floodlights.
---
If we are to have standing floodlights then let's at least make them something interesting...or let's at least have something more impressive than what's on the current design. The floodlights on the designs look no better than something you might see on a five-a-side complex - the floodlights at the Rec are brilliant.

Using the old ones at dema?
Interesting idea, and would keep spme of the feel of an older ground.

Unless they are mounted outside the corner area.

Pretty sure DP means you'd be able to dismantle and move any new ones. The current ones are fit only for the scrap yard. Looking at their bases closely some years ago I'm quite surprised that they're still up. Mostly rust, held together by paint. As you say, a "Meccano" look to them (as opposed to the standard Abacus lamp-post) would add a touch of character, though. If I recall, places like Scunny have them outside the stadium walls

It would look nice I have to say, a bit old ground character.
It would be expensive though Stu, the cost of mild steel has gone through the roof in recent years.

Excellent suggestion Pete. Is anybody following this up? This is a great opportunity for Chesterfield to have another famous landmark.
Imagine how many Mums and Dads passing on the train will point out to their kids and say, 'Look there's Chesterfield's floodlights; a bit like their Spire.' It would be a public relations scoop for the Town and fantastic publicity.
It would be a crime to let this opportunmity pass. Have you spoken to the Terry Ward?

It isn't a call I'd like to make - "If we hadn't have bought those bendly floodlights, we'd have been able to bring in better players and get promoted..." but something would be good to lift it above the very basic, from the beginning. It will only gain proper character with use, as memories become attached to it, but a completely bland, brutal place will be difficult to get attached to. Perhaps the "Percent for Art" scheme will provide a way to incorporate some attractive and distinct feature into the build.
