I remember him putting Richard Dawson in his place when he came to Saltergate with Donny Rovers. RIP Bill probably the best centre half I've seen play for town.

I like Stu Basson's account:

"Legend has it that, after the Sheffield Wednesday winger Terry Curran mocked him during the course of a memorable game at Hillsborough in 1980, Bill gripped him warmly by the throat in the tunnel after the game in order to offer commiserations at Geoff Salmons' late equaliser."

Yes that Salmons half volley in the last minute at Swillsboro will be forever etched in the minds of those who were fortunate to be present

Bill played in my first ever match at Saltergate. Shrewsbury at home in league cup round 2 on 28th August 1979. We won 3-0 and I recall they didn't have a sniff at goal. They probably did but hehe it's my golden memory.

Even those who left two minutes before the end as I was sitting with my grandad in the Wednesday end...

Golden era and a golden player, rip.
