Before it gets dismissed as “Mailesque media” I’d welcome comments.

IMO local council should affect and concentrate on local politics and not on matters of international affairs…regardless of party, ethnicity or religion.

A morning for genuine Qs. What are your views (if it’s possible to have such a wide view) on the Jews as a race? I’m reading more and more about their history, right back to biblical times and am fascinated and confused in equal measure.

I appreciate that’s a wide ranging question and it’s not meant to be provocative or controversial.

Agree broadly but if a group of similarly-minded people choose to focus their attentions towards a non-local issue and a candidate campaigning about that non-local issue wins their vote, who are we to say that’s wrong?

That’s not a rhetorical question, I genuinely don’t know if it’s right or not. And I’m not speaking specifically with regards to the Greens councillor who shouted Allahu Ahkbar and started talking about Palestine during his victory speech either - he didn’t campaign on that basis, he’s a bell end.

Honestly?

I'm a long, long way from being anywhere near qualified enough to answer such a profound question.

However I had a Jewish friend. A good friend. To the point of being a prominent guest at his sons' Barmitzvha. And it's his teachings about the Jewish people, their history and the truths behind the tropes with which they're associated that guides my thoughts on this and similar issues.

Sadly he's no longer with us, however whenever I'm left angry by events in Gaza - in fact make that absolutely infuriated on occasion - I think of my friend and what he'd say...

Genuinely curious. I don’t know anyone of the Jewish faith. I’ve been interested in the Holocaust for years not because of Jews, Nazis or genocide but what makes a nation allow it to happen.

Chesterfield isn't as widely a diverse religious hot bed as London, We haven't got a Synagogue, Mosque or Gurdwara in the borough or either of the other local Council areas of NE Derbyshire and Bolsover.

True I guess - I nowadays tend to think (and hope) that everyone has a friend who is black/Asian/gay etc in 2024
