What a horrible interview that was. He had the daggers out straight away there, I know he said in a later interview that he was grumpy with him and apologized.
Made me smile that he said he would get rid of the numbers of players to bring better quality in, then signed players like Nelson and Muggleton.
Life goes on. Whatever happens.

It was supposed to be the big turnaround but was the start of five years of utter misery. Looking back. Most of his comments were robotic and while I hoped he would turn us round he didn't. Watching it again, it's like reliving the start of the nightmare. What an awful place we were in and nobody could have predicted how much worse it would become. When I used to watch the ground being built, I could never have imagined we would end up non league. But, hey, the nightmate is over and when I remind myself we are a league club again it's a great feeling.

What an absolute clown he was. Right up there with our most idiotic managerial appointments.

On paper he was the obvious choice - great knowledge of the league etc.
Previous history of success.
All round great bloke as well - just didn?t work out here.

The biggest managerial disappointment in clubs history - or at least one of them.

Allen had never been this far north and was literally scratching around for players.&nbsp;<div>On paper, a good manager but the interviewer really didn't help himself but Allen reminded me of Sheridan in his interview style.</div><div>He had the makings but the first few games were lucky wins- deary me. The nightmare is over.

Nothing against Martin as a bloke, but the guy was really on a hiding to nothing under the Chuckle Brothers.

In hindsight Evatt would have made a much better choice 🤔

I remember the appointment vividly. I wrote a letter to Martin Allen before the season kicked off Welcoming him to the club. I explained that wouldn't be renewing my season ticket due to Carson \ Allen etc and wished him the best of luck.

A week later he he knocked on my door in person and had a chat with me. I liked him. He didn't change my mind and unfortunately it all came crashing down. Not many managers would do that

The difference between the two was that Saunders was Allen's man and so was backed, where Jack Lester was to placate the fans and wasn't given two beans to rub together. I'm not saying that Jack Lester would have turned things around, but at least back give him a level playing field.

I sent Martin Allen a letter when he took over, wishing him luck, and warning him to be careful who he talked to, and told him to go an Chat to Jim Brown to find out who to and not to trust. He sent me a Xmas card that year as a thank you lol :)

On reflection, Sheridan's second spell. They're all pretty much a disaster - enhanced by injuries to key players. Saunders used to be at the club just after 7am on many mornings so you couldn't fault the committment

Sheridan?s second spell was toxic. I?ll never forget the sub 2,000 home crowds and being beaten at home by sides you?d never expect us to lose to.

He was trying to get us relegated to spite Allen and get another pay-off. Won?t be convinced otherwise!

Under martin Allen I will always remember what the late Justin Edinborogh said after his Orient team that won the National League that season beat us 1-0 at home

He said the opening 25 minutes of that match was the most pressure his team had been put under that season

from memory they broke away and scored with their first attack and that summed up the majority of martin Allens home matches as I recall

It just was not meant to be for him at Chesterfield i reckon

Martin Allen was a charlatan, (a used car salesman if you will), who talked himself up to the point where most fans got carried away without actually looking at his record (or lack of!) and used his charisma and 'charm' to keep getting job afetr job before being found out and taking a pay off.

He'd only started and finished the same season with the same club once or twice in his 20+ years managing.

Carson was hoodwinked in to giving him a job (although presumably made a few ? off the back of it after tipping his lad off to take the 33/1 on offer on him getting the job!) which disproves the old adage of "you can't b**lshit a b**lshitter?!
