I was having a look at Rotherham’s average attendance and they claim it to be 10600, that is a full 12000 less than the Championship average. Having said that looking at the their last game against Plymouth the stadium looked half full at best and yet they still claimed just under 10000. There must be a phenomenal number ST ticket no shows.

Suspect plenty didnt turn up to see them relegated smack in the middle of the Easter Holidays....probably all at Cleethorpes instead!

A bloke in my local is a Rotherham ST holder and he said the actual number in the home end (as opposed to the 'attendance') v Millwall the previous game was just under 5200. Safe to assume that it was well down on that v Plymouth.

In terms of numbers, season 22/23 (Championship) figures are shown in their accounts. Season ticket holders 6,711- average attendance 10,148.

It doesn't seem to work out that way though. If Rotherham are a typical example- wages rose from £6.6M (in the EFL 1) to £10.3M (in the Championship) - which was just about covered by the increase in central distributions and media deals.

What does seem to help, is that when you're selling a player, you're selling a Championship player- whose worth is generally far greater than someone down the tiers.

Depends how you go about it....just shy of £4m increase in wages is not just from wage increases to existing players if its in their contract, thats chucking a shed load of cash at players so presumably a number of signings from one season to the next.

That's the pattern though, I'm sure players agents will ensure there's an automatic large pay rise for any players in contract for a Championship season ('the club can afford it from all that revenue'), plus any decent incoming players won't be asking for League One levels of pay.

Per Deloittes, Championship wages in 21/22 season (figures not yet out for 2022/23) ranged from £11.5M for Blackpool, then £13M for Barnsley, £15M Coventry and Hull City, £18k for Luton, then rising to £90M for Fulham- with the majority incurring an annual bill in excess of £20M.

I reckon one club who did manage to turn a surplus was Burton in 16/17, their first season in the Championship, but they needed a profit on a sale of a player in their relegation season, 17/18, to make a profit. Their wages bill for 17/18 was still £10M.

From what I remember the increase in wages completely scuppered Yeovil when they got promoted to the championship and was the main factor in them dropping back into non-league.

On transfer deadline day in that season we spent the most money of any club in the football league as I seem to remember but after the failed promotion bids the players had to be sold on what was then a buyers market and at the end of the 82/83 season relegation followed and the club was within 10 minutes of going out of business I was told

Thats when Mike Watterson stepped in and saved the club appointed John Duncan as manager and the 4th division championship was won in 84/85

It's an expensive deal, getting to the Championship, and to be competitive, well, that's something else.
Rotherham haven't even looked like a championship all season, and it can't have been a fun season for their supporters, but we kinda know all about relegation seasons.

The vibes I'm getting are that the Kirk's brought some new thinking to NL pay structures to entice 3 L1 players - bonus based high rewards. Surely further fresh ideas will be forthcoming, and the agents that don't like them can do one.

We’ll see what they look like when the 2024 accounts are out. I suspect there will be some very large bonuses this season.
As for ‘when’ we reach the Championship, they said they had a plan.
Basically it’s more outside investors.
