Some of those stewards looked like school kids - not bouncers

They are not employed as bouncers.

Simple - abandon the game when it happens and award the points to the other side.

So what about Saturday when fans from both teams ran on the pitch?

Then the match is abandoned and played again behind closed doors.

So the away club also has to pay compensation - amount to be based on the away club's average following?

Great idea!

compensation based on the average away following of the offending club to be paid of course by the said club to the home club

Failure to pay immediately to the home club a points deduction to follow

An even greater idea!

Or match abandoned and both sides docked points.

Machine guns are too indiscriminate, snipers are the way forward.

Seriously doubt that any of the pitch invaders were suffering from cretinism, which is actually a very nasty disease. Using "cretinous" pejoratively is like using "****" or "spastic" as an insult.

The original poster probably didn't know that and didn't mean to cause offense but it's summat that the moderators might wish to note.*

Re the pitch invasion, there's been a bit of an over-reaction here. These things have been happening since the 19th century and don't usually end in injury or death. I'm sure I remember being actually on the pitch, along with 100 or so other fans, when Town scored a penalty against Mansfield at the Cross Street End in the early 1970s. Definitely remember Barnsley supporters doing exactly what Oldham's fans did on Saturday back in 1968, and Bury's in 2012. In the Bury game, Town fans also invaded the pitch, so any executions, transportations, point deductions etc should have been applied to both sides.

If you'd like to see a serious pitch invasion, borne out of hooliganism rather than over-exuberance, go on You Tube and watch the Newcastle v Forest cup tie from 1974. I blame their parents!

* especially after censoring the word "****" above.

Was it a legal goal? And did the invasion arguably change the outcome of the game?

I think life bans for all that go on the pitch. Next home and away match with no fans for the ones that invaded.

Sadly the videos I've seen show a couple of town fans jumping over and fighting too.

3 Metre high strong steel mesh with 6 inch hole size so it doesn't block anyone's view, including multiple gate entrances so access could be gained from anywhere in emergencies with only stewards having keys. Large openings for the players tunnel

Bare minimum should be we're allowed to keep 100 quid of their share of the gate receipts for every one of their fans that ran on the pitch. Use that money for the extra security We'll probably now get asked to supply.

Every attendee to be fitted with explosive ankle bracelets that detonate if the pitch boundaries are breached.

No reason why the pop-up sprinklers near the away end can't be retro-fitted with pop-up water cannon.
It's nice to be able to Trust again.
