How can a club taken over a month ago end up like this so soon?!

Quote
The sanction will be applied at the end of this season if the Latics, 14th in the Championship, finish outside the bottom three after 46 games.
Should Wigan finish in the relegation zone, the penalty will be applied during the 2020-21 season instead."

The players had already agreed to defer wages for 3 months, i think.

This overview might help indicate why Wigan Athletic have today gone into administration. Lowest revenue in the Championship means relatively low wages, but still made a £9m loss in 2019 (despite £7m profit from player sales). In fact, lost money 4 out of last 5 years #wafc

Football’s pretty much f*cked - the good thing is that there’s a glimmer of hope that things get reshaped pretty soon as it simply cannot continue. Wildly disproportionate amounts of cash are leaving the game into the pockets of players, sacked managers, agents and assorted grubby intermediaries. It has to end.

Sadly I don't think those at the top will recall these times once the dust has settled, they'll just revert back to their way of business (and screw the rest of football). It's the TV deals that will keep those at the top table going on the same...unless enough folk ditch the subscription channels (which would be great, but I fear most unlikely). One day there'll be a European "super" league and when that comes the national FAs need to have the bottle to say that any players who opt to join that forfeit their opportunity to represent their countries (but again I fear that wouldn't happen either).

(Instead of course he subsequently found an alternative way of losing £ millions).

I do not see it changing, sadly. Football is essentially controlled by TV broadcasters, gambling firms and the owners of the top clubs who either like sticking their cash into clubs or taking money out, the PL, FA & EFL are just puppets.
As long as there are big amounts of cash at stake, corruption, mismanagement and self-interest will dominate and ruin clubs at all levels.

Whilst ever clubs are allowed to spend above their legitimate income it will always be a problem

Reflecting on Dave Allen's decisions in the 2014/15 season, if he "bottled it" when promotion to the Championship became a real possibility, then perhaps the figures above provide some context to what his concerns might have been.
(Instead of course he subsequently found an alternative way of losing £ millions).
He could have had one season in the championship, kept the budget similar, told the manager his job was safe no matter the outcome and to plan for the next season in L1. And had a heap of tv money to clear debts and build the next season. Imagine the average crowds from a promotion, a season in the championship and then a season challenging again.
But that all depended on a well club making the most of its resources, not a shower of **** chancers spending someone else’s money with no thought form consequences
