I remember going to an FA cup match in the early 70s Leeds United v Liverpool.
It was played on a midweek afternoon due to the power strikes.
All the lads from Grassmoor who frequented the Corner House pub were there along with myself.
Barry Walker, Ivan Hayes, Neil Longden, Tank, Britt and a few others.
We were attacked afterwards on the train by a gang of Bradford City fans and would probably took a good hammering until a load of Scousers came to our rescue.
As is said it was a different time.
Do I know you ?

Hi mate you probably don't know me but I know all of those lads you mentioned as I was born, brought up and still live in Grassmoor. Also I'm roughly around the same age as them give a year or two. Barry and I were good mates as we were both born and lived just a few doors away from each other. Barry is a year or two older than me and although I was good friends growing up with him and his brothers I was especially friendly with his sister Lynn as there were only a few months age difference between her and myself so we went through school together. Around 15 years of us both leaving school I moved home and bought a house unknowingly until I had bought it next door to Lynn. I knew she lived somewhere in that area but not in that particular house. Uncanny or what? After 15 years of losing touch a little by both of us marrying and bringing up our families we rekindled our friendship. So we've been lifelong friends but sadly she passed away a few months ago. That's when I last saw and spoke to Barry at her funeral. She was such a lovely lady and both my wife and I miss her lots. I occasionally went in the Corner House, Sun Inn, Barley Mow etc with Barry before matches back in the day so I suppose it's quite possible I could have been in your company in the past mate.
Until I'm 6 feet under baby I don't need a bed
Gonna live while I'm alive I'll sleep when I'm dead

I would hazard a guess that 50% of this board were not even born in 1969 Warfey !!!

I was conceived in 1969, does that count?

Last match I remember when we played them at home was a league game but can’t recall the exact year. There was a mad nutter from Pompey wearing a suit who took on all the kop on his own before the game started at Saltergate.

It was 1976 I remember it very well, it was way before kick off with mainly just us kids on the kop

Been to Fratton Park once. Watched from the Directors’ box and had to be restrained from celebrating by my wife when Armand scored.
These go to eleven.

No Dave didn't make it, some dreaded lurgy. Ironically it was the last town FA cup game I missed (Stockport covid season excepted) Also went there 72? for a league cup 1-0 victory thanks to a king Ern header?

Hi Dave, it was the 3rd September 1977 and we lost 3-0 but it was a Saturday. You had a three piece suit on and an attractive blond girl on your arm as you sauntered out of the ground. We were worried about getting to the car and so we went for a look in the dry moat that they had at the time to make it more difficult to get on the pitch.

Ironically we played quite well and I think that Ricky Green and Stuart Parker hit the post and crossbar about 5 times between them. I remember saying at the time that they were poor and I think that they got relegated that season.

Take care Warfey, cheers Paul.

You were obviously a popular man with the ladies back in the day!

Like Marmite, you do polarise opinion, and don't always fully engage your brain before posting. However, when Luke passed away on the 19th December 2010, every away game you always asked me how I was and said to Kimberley "look after him" which she has more than done. I will never forget that and I'm posting this so that hopefully those fans that don't know you can have a more balanced view of Warfey.

I hope to see you at a game again and perhaps it could be in the Football League if you're well enough gingers crossed. Take care Warfey and goodnight, Paul.

Thanks for this. It wasn’t a nightmare after all but I can’t believe it was that long ago. That means I was 13 and it makes me feel quite old today

I must have been wearing my long hair and baggy jeans. Fortunately there’s no photo evidence as far as I know
