Seems a trend that ex players and the like seem to make up or embellish stories and tell them on podcasts or on the radio or for their speaking engagements

We know about Dean Saunders story about Brian Clough that everyone present has said was nonsense, but came across something from ex ref Kevin Lynch on social media where he recounts a story of Sunderland playing at Saltergate and running the line in front of 5000 standing angry Mackams whilst Town were 3-0 up!

A quick google search shows we?ve never scored 3 at home to Sunderland and the away fans would never have been stood directly behind a linesman running the line!

Why do these idiots blatantly lie about stuff to get a cheap laugh off some idiots doing a podcast?

I think this was mentioned on here a few years ago, so sad that people feel the need to lie online!

It was enlightening to listen to Barry Fry cropping up on both Sacked in the Morning and Quickly Kevin recently. I like the bloke but one 'interview' was a carbon copy of the other. The presenters had clearly been sent a set of questions so as he could follow his script. I wouldn't mind betting that he does after-dinner speeches with the same content.

Ultimately, people of low calibre like Saun**rs will lie to keep themselves vaguely relevant so as they can earn money.

I'm sure I recall that approx. a third of
Compton Street was given to away fans with big followings. Where it met Cross Street.

Blackburn beat us 0-1 I think, in 1980, or 1981, in front of 10k +. I'm 99% sure Blackburn had top 3rd of Compton Street.

yes that did happen quite regularly with away fans on the pop side as I recall but as for the 3-0
Sunderland score line that is Kevin Lynch most definitely either not remembering the score or trying to add

Characters like Cloughie will inevitably attract many stories some of which are bound to be apocryphal.
I know Saunders is not much liked on here, nevertheless it was a wonderful story which you just wished was true. Saunders told it brilliantly too. Seems a better storyteller than he was a manager! I think the gist of it might have some truth, but like all good storytellers he exaggerated it for effect.
What is probably true is that Clough, always eccentric and unpredictable, sometimes behaved ever more bizarrely as he got older and the drink took effect. For example, there was the bizarre story that he was found unconscious in a ditch towards the end of his life.

Very sad indeed as the only game I can remember was November 1987 and I think it was a night game 1.1 draw and crowd was 5700 so it must have been only 700 town fans their and if I remember rightly they caused a bit of trouble when they came for too

Yes, I'd certainly heard the ditch one. I can add a (true) Clough story from a mate. He was driving through Derby (Allestree, IIRC) early one morning and an old man waved him down with a walking stick. He pulled over, and to his astonishment Brian Clough asked him for a lift to the off-license, where much booze was purchased. It was the morning of a big match on TV, which they discussed. I know Clough did give up the sauce in the end.
Yeah, I know, cool story bro etc, or whatever dickheads reply.

Was a Saturday afternoon game, ref gave them a late penalty to equalise. Jamie Hewitt had put us in front. A very young (17 I think?) Carl Muggleton in goal for us on loan from Leicester. I remember Muggleton looking petrified as the Sunderland fans were running amok around him in the goal area in front of the kop while the game was ongoing.

I would have only been 12 myself, and remember it being pretty scary.

I thought it was a scary game as they didn't bring as many as predicted but all nutters and did John Mcphail score the last minute pen

Seriously though, Warfey and many other seasoned Spireites will have some excellent stories to tell from different games and it would be a very good heritage project to capture this

I remember this,it was on not that long ago
It was late on maybe talk sport or radio 5 and I remember chuntering away to radio because I was there and remember most of that game but none of what lynch stated
They do it because they don?t get challenged on any facts on a podcast,if he?d have told that story at chesterfield stadium he would have been pulled up on facts and the story would have fallen flat
I hear Jamie Ohara trying to tell football stories about his time at chesterfield often on Talksport and usually he?s got some part of the story wrong

The Holte end at Villa dd indeed get a visit from a number town fans when we played there in 1970/1.
