Was told a story by a mate that some years ago (80s I seem to remember) the town supporters bus setting off to an away match at Rochdale.

But the ground they arrived had a sign up announcing the next match at Gigg Lane was the following Saturday. They’d gone to Bury.

Whether true or not I don’t know, I’m sure someone will have heard this tale if so.

Something similar was when we travelled to Wigan in 1980 for our 2-2 drawn FA Cup game. Upon entering Wigan the driver of our coach shouted out "The ground is just over there look. You can see the floodlights." As I remember it was well after 2pm and it was a 3pm kick off but when we arrived at the stadium the place was absolutely deserted. There wasn't a soul to be seen around the place except for a couple of pigeons strutting around. We then noticed a sign saying " Welcome to Central Park home of Wigan rugby club." We needed to be at Springfield Park Wigan for the Town match!!!
I suppose we should have been grateful the coach driver at least got us to the correct town!

Some southerners seem to think Brighton v Palace is a derby.

It is, but not based on geography.

Used to visit Southampton to visit family. My youngest was about 8 and had worked out that Southampton was on the South coast. When we were driving back (M40 and A34 past Silverstone that day) he asked why, if Southampton was on the South coast, Northampton wasnt on the north coast.... Having lived in the south east for over a decade now, its obviously where the southerners think the UK ends!

It's a rivalry, not a Derby. A Derby is a match between 2 teams from the same city/town. Liverpool v Everton. Man U v Man C. Celtic v Rangers. Etc..

Its a bit of a contrived rivalry to make up for the fact that neither have any real local rivals. Presumably it was Sky at some point that cooked up the name "M23 Derby" to try and make a crap Super Sunday game look appealing!

No it isn't. There is a strong rivalry stemming back to the late 70's when Brighton and Palace had three fa cup replays against each other and grew stronger when Brighton moved to Gillingham as Palace catchment area runs into Kent.
I was at a match at Selhurst Park in the 80's and the sheer hatred was palpable.

There are no rules - it’s football rivalries.

Rivalries are one thing....a derby is called a local derby for a reason, its two teams local to each other.

But it’s only football - there’s no quantifiable rule.
The biggest Derby is called the North West Derby - Liverpool and Man Utd and that’s about 40 miles apart.

The East Anglia derby is about 50 miles and an hour and a half drive.
