Heard yesterday that his transfer fee when joining Stoke was something in the region of £800,000-1 million. This is a guy who has had 4 seasons as a regular for Barca scoring 1 in 4 in La Liga, and has also played for Milan and Ajax while still only 24 years of age.

And some people on here think we will get £2 million for Doyle???!

The difference is, he hasn't done anything at any of the clubs you have mentioned. He is someone who was highly thought of, however has never lived up to the hype. Doesn't matter what your background is if your doing the business.

Scored over 40 goals for Barca in 4 seasons, playing alongside Messi, Iniesta et al.

Was a big factor in Ajax winning the Eredivisie.

Is now probably Stokes best player in the Premiership.

24 years old.

And some people reckon we will get £2 million for Doyle.

He was hardly a regular over 4 seasons at Barca...he made 25 starts and just shy of 40 sub apps in those 4 seasons!

He went to Roma for £10m but only managed 13 starts before they shipped him off to Milan for a year where he managed 9 starts then a year at Ajax brought 20 starts! Then he signed for Stoke for £3m not £800,000/£1m according to this....

His full stats are here...

Stoke got a bargain, but it was a gamble based on Bojan falling out of form. I think it's apparent that the Stoke move was more or less his last chance at the top level. Just because one signing was an apparent bargain doesn't really mean that all other transfers/potential transfers should be judged against it. A bit like saying, 'if Andy Carroll's worth £35m, xxx xxxxxx must be worth £50m'.

17 goals in 4 seasons for Barca according to soccerbase, 26 according to Wikipedia...neither mention scoring 40!

He ended up on the bench at Ajax and his move has generally been considered a failure, with Ajax declining to extend his loan.

40 in all comps for barca in 160 games. wiki is correct as soccerbase doesn't include league games from 2007-2009.

just saying - I think we should get this doyle fee into perspective. doyle will never play in the prem, yet bojan is considered a failure for being the best player in a top 10 prem side.

Why does Wikipedia have 26 in 104 then even if Soccerbase is wrong?

Also you are basing it on one player....can you find another 4 or 5 to prove that the fee you said makes Doyle worth something else. Forgetting possible goals he's still trailed around europe since his time at Barca doing not a lot and then Stoke have paid £3m for him not the £800k you say. He was on a downward spiral at that moment and its pretty much known that buying foreign players tends to be cheaper than british most of the time. Stoke wouldnt have got him for £3m had he been English! There is also the fact that for one like him potentially on the cheap there are numerous over priced players that you could say they went for that so Doyle is worth the same.

We won't get 2 million for Doyle.

Probably won't sell him now anyway. Interest has dropped

Bojan was poor for Ajax and it's actually quite surprising to see him doing well in the Prem as he wasn't good enough in a considerably weaker league (The Eredivise). He failed in Italy with two different teams, also.

But yeah, we won't get 2mil for Doyle, I doubt many realistically expect that. I said at the start of the window I didn't think he'd be sold and I stand by that.

Think folk read a bit to much into the £2m figure...it was blatantly put out there by the club through the media as where they will start from in terms of the negotiations and would then look to settle somewhere in between that and where the buying club wanted to be. Its strange that for so long folk criticised the club for selling on the cheap then when they try to inflate the fee of someone some folk were trying to knock the club down saying he isnt worth that much.

For what its worth i'm with Goku in that i thought he would still be here come 1st Feb....unless someone made a silly offer we couldnt turn down.

We could get Darren Fletcher for nowt from Man Utd. Does that mean he's not as good as, say, Ollie Banks who we paid a fee for?

Your comparison's flawed, BC.

Might be flawed, but these are two players, in contract, on the open market, in their mid 20's (Bojan younger), one of which has played for Barca, Roma, AC Milan, Ajax and now is the stand out player for a top 10 Premiership side.

And one plays for little old Chesterfield. And some on here thought the Chesterfield player was potentially worth more.

If you google him signing for Stoke though numerous sources quote the figure as £3m....

I've seen quotes from 800,000 to £3m but far more quoting £800,000.

Ah well he's out for 6 months now so perhaps Doyle is worth more....
