JonB (above) says they do have a long term deal in place, but it started after the cut off date.

I did see that mentioned on twitter from a reliable'ish source but i think since then its come to light that while they have been talking there is no agreement in place that meets the requirement as it stands between the council and the club. The council offered a deal but it included a break clause to renegotiate should they complete sales of leisure services as they are trying to do. I think that part the EFL didnt like.

No they don't. They followed the rules 100%. If in doubt read the rule posted above

As more information surfaces it looks to me the NL carry the least blame.

It is the EFL that is banning Gateshead and not banning Halifax
It is the council and the club that is unable to reach a solution over the tenancy
It is the council that owns Halifax’s stadium not the NL
The NL seems to have fought Gateshead’s corner. The only other solution was to announce 8th place to compete in the playoffs and you can guarantee that would have had people moaning.

Lots of valid complaints about the NL but this episode probably isn’t one of them

Edit
Just checked the NL rules
APPENDIX B
THE NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAY-OFFS SEASON 2023/24 COMPETITION RULES
1. At the end of the season, the Clubs who finish in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th& 7th at the end of the Playing Season in accordance with Membership Rule 12 and meet the Qualification Criteria for The Football League as at 1st March and meet the Criteria for Admission to Full Membership of the Football Conference Limited shall be eligible to enter the end of season National League Play-Offs Competition “Competition”.
If a Club is not eligible to enter the Competition then it shall not take part in any play-off matches. In that event such Club shall not be replaced and the Competition structure and draw shall be adjusted as necessary by the Board on the basis of the remaining Clubs’ final league positions.

Therefore the NL followed their rules to the letter

Too many are just so wanting to have a dig at the NL. Like the EFL so much better run. Not.

I was wondering about the situation with Solihull’s ground and how that compares. Weren’t Jaguar Land Rover keen on taking the land back off the football club recently?

Presumably as it stands Solihull meet the requirements.

Why they finished 8th and deserve nothing. Imagine if they had been pipped to 8th by Oldham and the NL broke their own rules and let them in the playoffs

I see it as next in line.

Soli Moors now complaining about the scheduling of less than a 3 day break between Weds and Saturday... (I think the the semis could actually have been switched around), I'm not quite sure about the last line saying that ONLY SM have been prejudiced/inconvenienced by this whole scenario. As stated above, Gateshead have had the worst of it.

..and really what is the difference between Gateshead and Halifax when they are both council owned pitches???

Halifax presumably have an agreement with the council that meets efl requirements.

Halifax have been just as inconvenienced as they were due initially to play at Bromley on the Sunday. I can't on the face of it see why the game can't be played tomorrow

Thanks Mr P. basically whichever way it is looked at, it is a mess... thankfully we get to moan about EFL organisational skills next season...

Presumably if Bromley go up they’ll have to spend a chunk of their increased revenue on ripping up and laying a new pitch?

one thing is for certain

Its a big relief that for the first time in three seasons we are not involved somewhere down the line in the whole play off process

Especially this season with all the confusion about who plays where and when etc

Bring on the EFL and the new challenges that will bring

Yes, as did Sutton a couple of seasons ago.

And Harrogate before that. They ended up playing a couple of games at Doncaster i think as the pitch wasnt ready in time.

I read the NL competition rules and clubs have to make a commitment to meeting EFL pitch requirements to gain entry to the NL and they way I interpreted them is if they get promoted and fail to carry that commitment through and are refused entry to the EFL they get demoted to the NLN and NLS. Good job for Gateshead that rule didn’t extend to stadium tenure.

Did Rotherham have a 10 lease when they were kicked out of milmoor and played at the sports ground?

Almost certainly not but it's a different scenario when you already in the FL. Entry requirements are just that.

As mentioned previously there have been a few cases of current EFL member clubs ending up homeless including Coventry twice in recent years but its probably more difficult to boot a side out. By having it as an entry requirement they are reducing their risk of a club coming in then ending up homeless.
