If any of you folks enjoy a Sunday lunch carvery I can point you in the direction of something very good indeed, although it's a 30 minute drive from Chesterfield, but well worth it. Without exaggeration I'd say it's the best carvery I've ever had - and I've tried a few in my time, not just locally but all over the country.
It's a pub called The Bear at Alderwasley. In fact it's near to Alderwasley, but not actually in Alderwasley.
To get there you need to go to Matlock, continue down the A6 through Matlock Bath then turn right at the lights at Cromford and go up that very steep hill towards Wirksworth.
Just as you reach the very top of the hill there's a left turn - I think it's signposted Black Rocks or something like that - but anyhow, it's at the very top. Turn left there and just carry straight on for about a mile and a half. You come to a junction with a pub on your right - go straight on there as well and just keep going - you'll come across it on your left. It's a big white pub that stands on its own on the moortop - with nice views looking over towards Crich.
I think it won some award a while ago for best dining pub in Derbyshire - which is probably how I came to hear about it.
Anyhow, first of all, it's advisable to book if you want to dine between 12 and 3. After that it thins out a bit. They serve till about 5 I think. If you turn up on spec you might be lucky and get a seat in the dining area - but it's a bit lacking in atmosphere in there - it's best to book a table in the bar areas.
The pub is a really rustic old place. Very big with lots of little rooms and alcoves, exposed beams and fireplaces and a good choice of real ales and wines.
But it's the food that is the big draw. A sunday carvery there consists of pork, turkey, beef, lamb and even ham or gammon sometimes. They even do 2 big joints of beef, one medium-rare and another well done for those who like their beef that way.
The thing is you can have as much as you want. It's not one of these where they just cut a couple of slices and be off with you. And you can have a bit of everything as well. There's no restriction on that. Last time I went I was having beef but the lamb looked absolutely delicious as well. I asked the guy if I could have a bit of the lamb and he said, "do you want this piece" and gave me the remaining chunk of lamb which was like a small joint in itself!
Absolutely superb it is - and it's not just about the quantity, but the quality is really good. And they have a big choice of veg that you can just help yourself to.
£9.95 I think it was. And £5.95 for kids.
That won't please the 2 for a tenner brigade - but it's worth every penny.
I nearly always do sunday lunch at home and my kids never want to go anywhere else usually because they say it's never as good as eating at home. But the Bear at Alderwasley is one place they really look forward to going.
There's also some nice walks around there as well. We usually park up at Ambergate station (opposite the Hurt Arms on the A6) and walk up through Shining Cliff wood to the Bear. Takes about an hour.
Really worth a try anyhow if you fancy a change to cooking it at home but still want top quality and not to be ripped off on the quantity either.
