Having managed to get out today and walk round the affected areas - I saw an unmitigated mess from the retail park, Horns Bridge, and especially Brampton. Never seen Chesterfield like this before. perhaps the Prime Minister at some point or some other character would care to come up here and have a look around.
Some very stoic folk and businesses embraced that true British spirit of trying to get things sorted, but:

I feel, given the fact this was an accident waiting to happen, and is more likely to happen in the future, I feel the 'authorities' have got questions to answer - whether local or more national ones. Flood mitigation appears non-existent in these areas around Chesterfield.
Surely, in 2023, this should never have reached the scale it did.

There’s no chance Mr Sunak would come and view what we’ve experienced for the last 36 hours or so.
The lack of investment by the county council and the borough is criminal.
We’ve got drains hundreds of years old that can’t cope with the amount of water that now goes into them.
We’ve got soakaway land that’s been built over and drive way after drive way that’s been block paved or concreted over meaning more water running into an inadequate drainage system.
Freak weather happens from time to time but we need to learn lessons or more families will continue to be left in dire straights by hap hazard neglect.

I’d imagine it would be worth taking a look at some of the projects the councils, both county and borough, do spend their money on, it might be interesting!

I feel so sad for the businesses up Brampton…The Anchor has now closed for the foreseeable future & the girls that transformed it were doing an amazing job, always totally booked for meals on Sundays etc….no it’s all been taken away from them…really sad
And a word for that dickheadTravis Perkins lorry driver that ploughed through the water past the Anchor & caused more damage, wants sackings….pr1ck

They might have other areas they feel they need to put money into.

All I know is I heard a rumour DCC were on the verge of bankruptcy, So the chance of spending ANY money on flood defences looks slim to say the least

It’s interesting to determine where the root cause of this flooding stemmed from!!??
Some say it’s the wingerworth housing development, some say it’s the new Sheffield flood defences that moved their problem further south

After 2007 the government granted the Environmental Agency £2m to help with flood defences in this area. From what I’ve been told tonight, only £200k of that has been spent. Whether that’s true I can’t vouch for it.

I walk the canal alongside the river Rother everyday and I have seen work being carried out on drainage clearing etc. over the last 12 months.

Drainage clearance just makes the run off to the rivers Rother and Hipper easier and quicker the rivers are what they are and once they are full they will burst their banks.

As Toby Perkins rightly said money has been invested by the government and work has been done but no matter what they do it just delays the inevitable bursting of river banks.

The perfect solution would be to divert the rivers away from the town but that would cost £billions.

I'm told the Anchor has no insurance? or after 2007 couldn't get any? Also went down Chatsworth Road this morning so sad to see the devastation to both homes and property so sad.
As for the loon in the TP lorry...you're getting sacked in the morning?

Once again this was an exceptional weather event.
As regards the river Hipper it has to take every single drop of water that comes off Beeley Moor and everywhere below it.
In the twelve hours from midnight Thursday to midday Friday a river that normally runs at 1 foot deep rose by a further 10 feet.
There was nothing going to stop it bursting its banks when it hit its lower points, even down Hipper Street and Alma Street that have fairly high stone walls on the river bank.
As the insurance companies will no doubt say an act of God.

A pub i never bothered with but, looked a bit run down but since it got taken over what a difference, as you say excellent food and served a goos pint of bass too. Think there will be a few pubs closed down there for a bit too sadly

Travis Perkins are already aware of this event and they are investigating it.

He might be a decent working bloke who thought his vehicle could get through and might have been unaware of the problems it would cause and just wanted to get home himself to make sure his family were safe, he might have had a daughter or son stranded. So because of this he might be sacked and lose his livelihood with all the consequences that that invokes?
Who decides the moral high ground?

I suspect the authorities could probably make driving without due care and attention stick.
My thoughts are personally with the lady driver of the mini who was apparently still in it at the time.

Merc, he squeezed past an emergency vehicle blocking the Rd, aimed at the vehicle in the water, drove thru far too fast causing a wave to not only soak someone attempting to cross the Rd, but also throw the car in water into the pub, he drove without due care, and deserves to lose his job, and be prosecuted too..

That said by a (former) hgv driver .
all we are saying, is give us ...a goal, or 2+
