The other day, the BBC named the Port Vale v Crewe game as a "Staffordshire derby".

A Man Utd fan I used to work with thought Colchester v Chesterfield was a local derby.

Any other good ones?

Des Lynam. Chester v Chesterfield
Thing is, travelling all over the country over the years watching CFC, it’s very rarely I couldn’t tell you where a significant town or city sits geographically.

The rage whenever we get called a Yorkshire club is unmatched.

Was told a story by a mate that some years ago (80s I seem to remember) the town supporters bus setting off to an away match at Rochdale.

But the ground they arrived had a sign up announcing the next match at Gigg Lane was the following Saturday. They’d gone to Bury.

Whether true or not I don’t know, I’m sure someone will have heard this tale if so.

I was working on a farm near Bristol in 1975 when a local suggested Chester v Chesterfield was a derby. He was completely lost when I told him there was 75 miles between them. I knew where I was in the world, I'm not sure he did!

I remember something similar in the early 70s. An East Midlands bus taking us to a night match at Barnsley got lost and was heading Leeds, if I remember right. We got in the ground just before half time, lost the match, and had the bus Windows put in on the return journey, happy days 😀.

Some southerners seem to think Brighton v Palace is a derby.
These go to eleven.

Not quite football related, but work but still funny.

My old boss (who lives in Leicester) thought Glossop was near Derby. I explained well, not quite, it's in Derbyshire but actually near Manchester.

I spent about 20 mins arguing but being the boss, I thought "ar@ehole" and gave up.

The next news was, he tried to find Glossop but ended up too far up the M1 and near Sheffield.

And he had a better car than me with a sat nav...

Port vale to Crewe is probably closer than chesterfield to Mansfield isn’t it?

We were asked years ago by a copper, at an away day in Gillingham if Chesterfield was near Chester, Mr Smith gave a suitable response “I take it geography is not your strong point”😂

Now you're splitting hairs, Kidsgrove on the border, Alsager (the better part in Staffs, the council estate in Cheshire).

Anyway, back to us. Didn't Cardiff once wish us a safe journey back to Yorkshire?

Had some corkers from folk down south, those who have never been north of watford gap, like chesterfield is near birmingham and someone who said coventry was up north.

Had a mate from Coventry. He said he was called a northerner by fans south of Watford Gap, but when he went to live in Hartlepool via work he was called a southerner.(‘we hate southerners’)

My wife once thought Northampton and Southampton were next to each other.

I was asked the same once and I replied "yes, the same as Manchester is near Colchester". He didn't get the sarcasm! :D

Was just answering the question raised of distance between Port Vale Fc to Crewe Fc as regards Us to Mansfield Fc.

So are we Southerners or Northeners? Being Midlanders sounds a bit wishy-washy, and the Pennines start just North of Ashbourne, so I'll settle for Northerner, even if it makes my friends in Newcastle laugh.
