Academy Efl Question about academy

I was wondering about the academy if we get promoted. Once back in the EFL I think it becomes eligible to become funded again, probably as a Cat 3 or 4 academy.
It’s not compulsory though.

So I was wondering if anyone is in the know, or whether there’s any news on whether the club would like to get proper EFL EPPP Academy status and funding again if/when we get promoted?

No idea, but at our level of it costs us any sort of significant amount it’s not worth having, any league standard player in our area will be snapped up by a bigger club, even when we were in league we had very few players come through and be of any use

At our level, developing youth which can then potentially be fold is crucial. A lot of clubs have done very well from developing young players that bigger clubs then buy.

And if you do become a funded EFL academy, if I’m not mistaken, if another academy comes in for one of your kids, they have to compensate you at around £25000 for every year the youngster has been in your academy

EPPP is always presented as a stitch-up by the Premier League designed to enable them to poach young players for buttons. Not sure what benefit the investment would bring. Brentford ditched their academy when they were in the lower leagues, in favour of a B Team, but I think they have re-opened it recently, presumably as the system is now rigged in their favour as a Prem team.
These go to eleven.

Go on then, how many academy products have we developed and sold for a decent fee in the last 50 years?

As I said; anyone decent round here will be hoovered up by bigger clubs such as the deedar two

I think that’s what the new compensation system is there for.

Lose a player older than 14 and you get a minimum of £25000 for every year you’ve had the player

If it’s a kid you’ve already offered an apprenticeship to, you get even more.

If the player goes on to make first team appearances eleswhehe you get even more

I think it’s changed for the better since we were last in it, which is why I’m keen for us to get it back

Yeah it might be peanuts for a Prem club, but to us that peanut could be very beneficial

They’re a kid at Mansfield who is 15 at Mansfield that Leicester and Forest are interested in. I’ve heard that they are jostling to get him with compensation figures of over £300,000 being discussed

You definitely need a good academy manager that knows what they are doing, but there’s good money to be made by unearthing young players that bigger clubs will throw some money at to take a chance

Hearing that there are even more benefits to the club going back to being a proper EFL academy since we last left. Someone was saying that their kid plays in the academy, and the parents are hoping that we sign up again to be a full EFL academy because of the funding that it then gets. To pay for better coaches and facilities. Also, apparently if you bring a homegrown player through to the first team, after a certain number of appearances it triggers a regular payment to your club for as long as he is your player playing in the first team squad etc.

The academy already plays games against EFL academies in-between their grassroots games. By going back to the EFL they get the opportunity to be in the EFL academy fixture games schedule which can only be a good thing. Hearing that once you are in that, you also get access to players who get released by the top clubs at U16 to bring into your youth teams. We've all seen players that have slipped through the net only to then make good careers after being picked up by lower league football clubs. It can only be a positive for us.

I think something was mentioned at the AGM about the academy when we are back in the EFL…can’t remember exactly what, but it was positive.

I'd be interested to know what it was that was discussed at the AGM about it

Jordan Bowery. 1/2 million quid. Would have paid for running the academy for 5 years alone without any external funding.
Add Tendai Darwika but I don't know how much Burnley paid.

Will Russ in 2018, undisclosed fee with sell ons depending on how well he does

He signed for Southport in January, having left Leicester in 2021 for Fleetwood, so I imagine little to nothing coming

Soccerbase says £550,000 for Darikwa.

Bowery came from Derby County and Darwika came from Notts County

And even then that’s only 2 in the last 25 years with hardly any academy graduates ever making significant first team appearances

Unless it’s fully funded from elsewhere it’s a waste of money

Not a chance.

IIRC based on the figures that I saw, our academy / youth team costs were circa £400K+ pa. Perhaps Moondog will confirm.

Would I be right to assume that you will have some skin in the game if the academy was to return?

In an ideal world, the funding should help clubs develop homegrown talent that go on to become established professional footballers. You only have to consider the number of players that have gone through our system and made the grade to appreciate that it's a rarity. As I see it, rather than developing footballers, the funding enables clubs to employ more coaches and more staff.

Sadly, the funding is open to abuse despite being audited. In some cases, clubs have been known to misappropriate funds to support other areas of the business that are unconnected to academy/youth development.

Apologies but I don't know what that means?
