I recall the BBC did a piece on the revitalisation of Altrincham town centre, espousing they were lessons to be learnt for every small town.
Yeah, we’re just missing the spending power of the Bentley, Ferrari and Range Rover owners.
I get what you are saying, but Altrincham town centre was looking tatty, they changed the market centre from somewhere selling ladies knickers and cheap tat to a foody place. You don't have to be a millionaire to buy a pie and a pint, and just by doing that they seem to have reversed the place's fortunes, by making the central bit somewhere nice to go, and telling people about it. Which is where Chesterfield falls down, sorry the place isn't marketed well enough, which is ironic being as it's supposedly a historic market town.

Still think we have to find a more realistic benchmark than a town of which it’s own website says: The immediate population is made up of an exceptionally high number of professionals, captains of industry and homeowners," "The prosperity of the town and its inhabitants are such as to make it almost unparalleled outside the southeast."
Clearly those inhabitants are going to have a lot more lunchtime cafe spending power than a town like ours. Not to mention customer demand for the interior design shops on some of town’s streets.

Can’t understand why anyone would compare Chesterfield with Altringham. That place was rejuvenated by being a major interchange to the Manchester Tram System.
It was always a pleasant town already surrounded by affluent areas. It will be further strengthen by well healed people priced out of trendy areas of Manchester. They can even claim they are part of the ‘Cheshire Set’ as opposed to the ‘Derbyshire Set’
The only thing we have in common with Altringham is that neither of us have a Football League club.

It used to be a real hub but, now it is identikit as a result of lame planning, limited inward investment and not enough people wanting to change it.
Chatsworth Road however....

I used to be someone who nipped into town on a regular basis, and whilst I agree, it isn't just the parking that puts me off doing it these days. Traffic flow for what should be a short journey to and fro from Walton is poor. Lights that go to red for no reason (top of Glumangate being the worst), single lanes where an opportunity has been missed to make it two, roundabouts that should only be on part-time signals, traffic wardens preferring to monitor the marked bays rather than issuing tickets to those who abandon their car where it causes problems, Traffic is increasing and the council don't appear interested in trying to help it move better.

The councils could make some of the other improvements required to improve traffic flow.
St Augustines doesn't get backed up like it used to, because they've made the two lane split much earlier.
Why the hell didn't the new car park get used as an opportunity to improve the feed from Saltergate onto the Donut? It is amazing what difference even just a few extra metres of two lanes can make. Why was the Lordsmill St roundabout never designed with two lanes exiting towards A61/Calow, so the A61-bound traffic doesn't have to sit in a queue at the lights near the Bridge Inn. Why does the traffic heading out of Chesterfield on Chatty Rd have to sit at a red light at the carpet shop/Harleys when there is nothing turning right from the Old Road side? Why is the set of traffic lights at the Glumangate/Saltergate junction on a cycle, rather than only changing when there is a car on Glumangate or a pedestrian has pressed the crossing...
Why, on the way home from the match today, am I probably going to be sat at a red light, unable to get on an almost empty West Bars roundabout from Beetwell St until it turns green?

The queues at peak times are horrendous creating all the obvious knock on effects.

I have written to the council about installing DL's ( Detector Loop ) at traffic lights on B roads that join A roads. It is lunacy that A road traffic have to sit waiting for no-one coming from the B road because they are on a timer. I have said A road traffic should take priority and should be kept moving UNLESS a vehicle arrives at the minor road junction and is waiting. This happens a lot at Woodthorpe Road junction.

I called in a week ago and it struck me that the place looked a bit grim.
Is it just me looking through rose tinted specs or is it symptomatic of most town centres ?
Plus, I only saw one CFC badge all afternoon and that was mine.
The football club is embarrassing and the town on its knees both a shadow of what they used to be
