Rotherham, probably the closest to us size wise n the Championship have an average of 10,700 this season from a capacity of 12,000. They typically allocate 2,500 to away fans.
Appreciate they are struggling, but if we did anything similar it’d still be touch and go as to whether it’d justify the expenditure. To coin a phrase we’d have to be sure we would ‘build it and they will come’.
Last season Luton had an average of 9,800, so even a successful club who gets promoted has a finite capacity. I suspect for us a 10k (ish) capacity would be plenty for most of the time.
For games where there’s high demand, some people may have to miss out, or they could buy a season ticket. Even if they were to sell out of season tickets, it’s not uncommon for clubs to have waiting lists for season tickets (Arsenal apparently have a waiting list of over 10 years). Having limited availability could also stimulate demand and increase season ticket sales.
I wouldn’t wholly discount it, but it seems quite a long way off for any capacity increases.
Very good post, there would be a massive cost to increase seat volume and no guarantee of the. Being used long term.
As a fan who can’t get every week, I’d happily miss many games because I can’t get a ticket, would show how well we were doing.
10k is about right for our club. Just need to make the most of every seat in the ground
