The last two years have been dreadful - I fear it won't get any better.

People die all the time. It wont get better and it wont get worse. Only perception will change.

Not on the scale of the last few years.

We live in a social media age now. All the stuff that no-one gave a monkeys about previously is now highlighted and even amplified so that people can feel better about themselves, as if somehow their insignificant lives mean more because of the shared grief brought on by some singer popping their clogs.

2 things as I see it:

1 - More people on Earth literally means more people to succumb to death.

2 - This is the age of the celebrity, where everyone who ever held a banjo is seen as a musician and anyone who ever sang anything is seen as an artist.

Not being funny mate but I can't see why anyone would give a single shiny shite about the deaths of anyone you mentioned.
Guess I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!
