My first guess given that Muggs is the next goalie coach and he has played for MA before is

He played for MA at Gillingham and Barnet and has had a lot of games at this level and League 2.

IF you were the Manager or say Barnet or someone similar, which Town players would you want to take?

As he said there’s no need foe a squad of much over 20 and he has already identified some new signings he must be confident he can shift a few out

You won't be aware (because we certainly weren't until we'd been down there a few seasons and one of our directors used to post honestly and openly on Stagsnet) that player contracts in the Conference only pay the players whilst the season is in full flow. As soon as it ends, they don't receive any money.
I'd assume Martin Allen is used to working in that way with having experiece at the level, so I would assume he wants to clear the lot out as they will be getting paid whilst on holiday.

Yes 40 week contracts & 20 man squads appear to be the norm especially with the smaller clubs

If players are under contract and no clubs want them he can’t shift them out - unless the club pays them off, which is a different financial matter entirely. How many are under contract atm?

I said same to my Altrincham supporting mate who is well informed of what goes off there but he said it's right and the norm.
I think it's to do with the contracts being fixed term as opposed to permanent and maybe they get round it by working a four day week

That is certainly the case for a lot of contracts in the NL but not all.
