Sadly Gordan Banks has died today aged 81....
The passing of probably the greatest Spireites legend. A truly nice guy whose games for us I still remember so well. Saw him in the Pudding Shop in Bakewell a couple of years ago. When I said how fondly he was remembered from his days at Saltergate he replied that he felt “humbled” because he enjoyed his time with us so much. Very sad news this morning and I hope a suitable tribute can be arranged in our Memorial Garden. I’m sure that will be the wish of many Spireites, young and old.

It's not often I feel genuine sadness at the passing of a well-known person (though of course I feel respect and empathy), but this news is genuinely saddening. The world has lost a giant, but a humble and decent one. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but everyone who did only spoke very well of him. RIP Gordon.
These go to eleven.

I'm too young to have seen him play for us but it makes you feel proud as a Spireite that someone who went on to win a world cup and be arguably one of the greatest keepers in the world was part of our club for a short while and we played a part in his journey.

This is very sad, he was my absolute hero. I met him at a charity game in Car Vale, he came to play to help raise money for the families of the Markham Colliery disaster.
I remember after the game he picked me up and put me on his shoulders and told me to un-hook the netting from the crossbar. I remember not being able to stop staring at his glass eye which he thought was funny. I really, really liked the guy and I'm gutted.

Bob Wilson on 5 live speaking very highly of him talking about seeing him at Saltergate. Gordon's save on that Pele effort was the best I've ever seen.
I remember watching that game v Brazil on tv as if it was five minutes ago; it was so brilliant that you couldn't believe it had actually happened, even when you'd seen it. I saw him play for England a couple of times at Wembley, and you just felt the opposition players were never going to beat him. By far the best goalie ever.

Saw him only last year at the Proact,, great guy who never forgot his roots and was grateful for all football gave him. Got 2 books signed and a few photos too... for those of us of a certain age the greatest save ever from one of the greatest players ever?? RIP Gordon.
