This is very sad, he was my absolute hero. I met him at a charity game in Car Vale, he came to play to help raise money for the families of the Markham Colliery disaster.

I remember after the game he picked me up and put me on his shoulders and told me to un-hook the netting from the crossbar. I remember not being able to stop staring at his glass eye which he thought was funny. I really, really liked the guy and I'm gutted.

An absolute gentleman as well as being the best in the world - and a Spireite.

I was also at that game, think I even managed to take a penalty against him. Being 9 he of course deliberately let it go in.

Thoughts with his family, but their memories and pride must be fantastic

He always had high esteem for his humble beginnings at Saltergate and had a special place in his heart for Chesterfield. He never forgot us and we will never forget him. A true Spirerite and a true gentleman. The world is a sadder place this evening. Thoughts and best wishes to all his family.

Without doubt the greatest keeper ever. I'm privileged to say I witnessed a couple of his many great saves against us (Kev Randall) and during an outstanding performance in a league Cup semi final replay v West Ham at Hillsborough.
RIP, Great man.

I was also at the Carr Vale game, we’ve certainly had some heartache since then watching town.

When you look at some of the people who get awards it’s a travesty that his achievements weren’t recognised more.

Several 'BB' members will be meeting the Town CEO next week.

I'll be suggesting the main stand at the Proact be named 'The Gordon Banks Stand' at that meeting.

A fitting tribute to our own world cup winner and what sponsor wouldn't want their name associated with his.

In severe deference to that idea Chris, but I would reserve the main stand name for Ernie (preferably before we lose him), maybe make one of the stands behind the nets be the Gordon Banks Stand would make more sense.

Absolutely!
Although I'd love a statue of Banksy and Ernie at some stage

Don't know about you guys but reading all the tributes to Banksy and mentions of Chesterfield has made me proud to be a Spireite (not something I've felt for a long time)

For those who saw Banks play his few games for us all those years ago, was it obvious then he would go on to be as good as he was? Did he stand out as exceptional even at that age?

I read yesterday he only started playing in goal at 15 which is remarkable really.

I think renaming one of the stands in Gordon's honour would be a fantastic tribute......... hope it comes off. Already a statue of him here at Stoke FC but i think renaming a stand at the Proact would be ideal.

Same here. Maybe I'm alone thinking this but Banks' name could appear opportunistic at this time.

and Stoke will no doubt do it, not belittling Banks' achievements in the game and his character but Ernie is far more deserving and ought to have done by now

AC would probably have more chance of a CHED stand than Ernie sadly
