Threads like these on Gordon Banks remind me of how nice this board can be.

How many of us recall Gordon at Stoke crossing the Victoria Ground pitch and shaking hands with Stevo before the third round game?
At the time I was glad Stevo didnt go to Leeds, and he clearly had a great time of it at Burnley and is still well thought of there , but I wonder if it cost him an England cap?

Either way, the two best keepers in the country played in that cup tie, and Town found 'em both.

I seem to recall an article about Stevenson in the DT when he was playing for town.
Apparently when Stoke were playing at home & town didn't have a game (usually midweek), Stevo used to go to the game, pay his money to stand behind the goal (no blagging a complimentary ticket) just to study Banks. He wasn't interested in anything else, just the way Gordon conducted himself, how he organised/spoke to his defence, his positioning etc. He said he learnt a hell of a lot from those trips to the Victoria Ground. He turned into a more than half decent 'keeper himself.

We've got a special in the program tomorrow by Jim Brown and are having a minutes applause before the start of the match too.

My old man used to regularly inform visitors that he had played at Saltergate on several occasions.

Only when pressed did he reveal that it was in the brass band at half time.

The fire brigade use that clip for training purposes to show how quickly quickly buildings and structures can be engulfed, depending on their shape and structure.

There's also harrowing testimony from the emergency services about how they couldn't reach some in the stands as the sheer heat from the fire repelled them. I feel great sorrow for a group of people who were trained and ready to respond, but couldn't. I've no idea how they carried that burden, desite being helpless in that situation.

The fact is there are so many variables that affect fire development and behaviour, all the video shows us is how that exact same building will behave in the exact same circumstances. A change of wind direction, fire starting in a different place, fuel against a different wall, any subtle change can lead to a completely different outcome. Once the fire caught hold it was a massive load of fuel with an unlimited supply of oxygen with a good ten minutes or so to grow completely unchallenged, almost impossible to stop in those circumstances.
The heat generated is incredible, you can see people’s clothes beginning to smoke when they are yards away from the fire, add into that the standard of fire kit was very different in those days they were probably still wearing plastic leggings and thin leather gloves, almost no thermal protection at all.

That’s the first I’ve heard that Matthews played at Saltergate.

I agree but in some cases these people wouldn’t have had any concept of the severity. The Saltergate main stand couldn’t have accumulated piles of flammable debris beneath the seating at least.

No mate can’t agree with the first sentence, they were on the pitch because of the severity just too stupid or insensitive for it to register, the dancing grinning idiots I’m referring to obviously.
My memory is a bit misty, but I tend to look for this kind of thing and I feel that the conditions were there at Saltergate probably similar to most wooden stands.

The absolute sheer dim witted stupidity of some people never ceases to sadden me, you see those clips and all those halfwits are dancing about it front of the camera with gormless grins on their faces with no consideration of seeing if they could help anyone.
The volume of smoke should have been sufficient warning but from the second flames were visible it was obvious how severe it was and that is was completely out of control.
An incredibly sad event, the only comfort that can be taken from it is that football authorities started to learn and require stricter safety standards from clubs. Let’s be brutally honest any wooden stand in the country, including the stand at Saltergate, was exactly the same disaster just waiting to happen.
