As a vastly overworked and vastly under paid public sector worker I agree with all of this 100% but regarding your second post please don't deride oldgoat because as a fellow low paid public servant both he you and I are in the same boat!
I don't believe senior civil servants deserve the inflated pay rises they receive and nor do any of my colleagues when we haven't had anything for 5 years and that's the same scenario....but if we all said diddums and walked away where would the country be?
6 years ago everyone said the public sector needed pay restraint to match the pain being felt by the private sector (despite us already being paid less) and boy did the Tories make us have it! but now the private sector are back getting 5% pay rises and we have magnanimously been awarded 1% for 4 years I'm sure the sympathy of those who bitched about us will now flow our way and we will get parity!
but don't hold your breath!
Now is not the time for the public sector workers to quibble with each other, now is the time to unite and ensure we get all get pay in line with our effort. The stumbling block to that ever happening is this government....

Can't you remember all the doctors supporting you when your terms, conditions of employment and pension was being changed. I'm sure they were marching the streets. Fact is everyone s bothered about their own interests and few other than in words do anything other than give vocal support and say how bad it is. Many can't afford to do anything else.

Ernie, doctors, nurses, firemen, police will always generally get more public sympathy because they are what people see on a daily basis...
Our areas never will get sympathy because we aren't popular, but just just because that's the case doesn't mean I don't agree that better off public servants don't deserve improved T&Cs....We all do!
That said I also totally agree with yours and oldgoats point that the lower paid public servants definitely deserve more recognition.......but that's probably because I'm one them!

Just teasing Dema!
As I said fair play to her but unfortunately public sector workers (nurses aside) rarely get any public support and the government know this, know it won't affect votes and thereby get free reign to s..t all over us!
As the junior doctors have just found out....
