I looked around for some deals on split singles yesterday, but i couldn't get a combo that was sufficiently cheaper than the off peak return to Bescot from Town to justify missing out on the better flexibility that ticket gives you (i spent a few years living in Birmingham and am looking forward to having a few pints in the city centre on Saturday!)
It seems that you really need a railcard if you want a decent deal on the train.

Only train I have booked is the 9.41 from Burton to New Street as I'm on 9.06 from town which calls there. Rest I have no reservations for.
