Shouldn't drop just one of them. Should have both been dropped. Chicken Southgate.

Why?

The whole thing is dumb. An internal incident - no more than 10 seconds, apparently- results in an external statement and the dropping of a player.

What happened to keeping things in-house and imposing invisible sanctions that don't hurt the team in any way? Is this the FA "flexing" against Raheem, now he's been highlighted (albeit reluctantly) as a spokesman against racism in the game?

Can't they both run the line in training matches and have their match fees donated to charity instead?

Presumably someone in house has leaked something to the press and once that gets out then the FA etc have to be making statements etc. I also assume what Sterling has done Southgate has seen to be unacceptable. Would have been nice had someone not leaked it all so the FA\Southgate have to be messing about dealing with it in the public eye when he could have just been "rested" for the game.

Don't know about you lot (apart from Search and Destroy who is frankly a joke) but if I had a player in my team who took defeat in the way Sterling did I'd be happy! It hurt him and his pride to lose to the scousers.

These things do happen all the time in football though and can't quite see what benefit there was in Southgate mentioning it unless the papers were going to make a big deal of it in the way only the English press do!

Only the English press?

What about the Italian, Spanish and that’s before we’ve even talked about the South Americans?

I don’t understand why he was upset, it’s not like he usually well against decent sides.

Would Southgate have dropped sterling had it been the world cup semi-final v Croatia? I doubt it very much.Poor man management imho

I think Southgate has done a terrific job at the helm of the national side, I personally have started to believe we are a capable, well managed side.

This latest incident will test him, not the scuffle itself but the way the media have pounced on it. We all know the British press love to jump on the national side and pull them down given the slightest opportunity, its the way it is.

Listening to Talk Sport this morning they were saying Southgate has handled it completely wrong by stopping Stirling from playing tomorrow. They were saying he should have pulled them together, given them a warning that anymore and they're gone etc etc. I immediately thought well what if he had already done that, what if they had already been warned and Stirling didn't let it drop? If that's the case then Southgate has done the right thing.

The thing is we don't know what went off, I think we get drawn in to what the media tell us and build out opinions based on that. I personally think Southgate has done what he thinks is right and on his track record as England manager so far, I am happy to go along with his decision as I'm a tad reluctant to believe the hyped up media stories, there is probably more to this than meets the eye.

If everyone wants him to treat the players like grown ups, they should act like grown ups.

I refuse to believe this is an isolated incident and that the media have wet their pants quite so much over it

Still wondering if youd like to enlarge on this point you made earlier, its a bit unclear what you were saying.

It’s clear to me.

He’s suggesting that were Gomez white that there could be a race angle taken somehow.

Reading the reports it sounds like he got off lightly, tried to shoot Gomez with his gun tatts

Really think Sterling is being made a scapegoat for this

I cannot believe any English player hasn't had Jesse Lingard or Ashley Young by the throat at least 5 times before now

What's racism got to do with anything? Sterling assaulted a team mate. Besides the obvious illegality of it, Southgate has laboured to remove the kind of club infighting in the squad that has existed in the past.

And why does Gomes have to be punished for being held by the throat?

He got dropped. Barely punishment at all. To suggest that he's the victim of a racist plot by the FA is beyond ridiculous.
