Got to say Shearer is in win win situation, although I have to admire him for taking on `mission impossible`.
Go down and he wont be blamed for taking over a sinking ship, stay up and he is instantly a geordie god.

is it a good appointment you think? I mean if he fails surely it tarnishes his reputation as a legend at the club

probably typical of shearer to come in at a time like this, where was he when he was asked before?.....if he is as good a manager as he is a pundit newcastle are doomed, constantly states the obvious and offers nothing of any interest, perfect timing to start off in a no lose situation...the geordie muggs will be salivating at his arrival, convinced in their tiny minds he is the new messiah

Interesting view 'spireiteblue' but I can't help comparing it with the oft heard claim that our relegation was entirely down to Rico. After all he had a whopping 8 games to save us whereas Shearer has only ... er ... 8 games.

No-one has ever said it was entirely down to Richardson, its just that the gutless, spineless and tactically inept performances didnt help us in our very achievable quest.

Actually, it was nine games.
And i think the criticism was because of Richardson's complicity in getting us into that mess in the first place, and the fact there was no improvement whatsoever following his appointment.
Indeed, statistically things deteriorated.

Its not often i agree with anything you say but i have to on your opinions of the obnoxious "legend" Shearer and the Geordie muppets.
This guys got absolutly no class at all, i can think of numerous examples where this spineless egomaniac has shown his true colours and today has been a typical example. Personally Newcastle Utd are my 2nd most hated team after Mansfield. I hate the city, the fans, the arrogance, absolutly everything including the excessive media bias towards them and their obnoxious fans and the fact the media tell us that fans of other clubs want to see Newcastle utd win a trophey. Message to the media; i`ve never met any other clubs fans who give a ---- about Newcastle and most fans will be in hysterics when they get relegated including me and if the over-inflated ego Shearer takes em down i`ll love it love it when theyre fighting relegation against Barnsley next season while we`re pushing for promotion to the championship.
Like i said earlier i can list numerous examples of why i hate this classless prat Alan Shearer, heres a few of them;
1) I mentioned his ego, which is enormous, this is why he failed to sign for manure back in the 90`s because his big head wouyldn`t allow him to be in the same dressing room as sir Alex, Keane, Cantona, Giggs, etc. Shearer has to be the main man in every dressing room, he has to be the star, and has to make most team/tactical decesions him- self, look how he treated Ruud Gullit who dropped him, he went straight to Fat Freddies office n demanded Ruud get the bullet.
2) Look how he treated Allardyce, telling him what tactics to play even when he wasn`t even employed by the club any more n then had the audacity to threaten he`ll go on a bender when it was announced Big Sam was resigning Bellamy, this signing didnt happen because Shearer would have been upset, so he drove to St Jameses, demanded fat freddie pull the plug on the bellamy transfer. Absoultly disgraceful, how many ex players can get away with that, he wasn`t even employed by the club and refused the managers job yet still had influence on who can and cant sign, makes me pig sick but still the sun shines out of his ass for all feckless geordies who deserve nothing more than championship football.
3) Turned his back on England, yet still commented how England should play and who should play. He turned his back on England for the same reason he didnt sign for manure, pure EGO, we had some quality players coming through and sad Shearer wouldnt be the main man anymore boo hoo.
4) His Crass comments directed at Ronaldo after the world cup quater final, apparently Rooney should " do him" in training when theyre back at their clubs, yes this guy is a total class act, but only to geordies and people that know very little about the politics of football.
I can think of hundreds of other examples of Shearers mistermeanors but i`d be here till next years april fools before i finished typing so i`ll leave it at that. I just cant wait for him to take them down and pack his bags and leave Newcastle in the championship suiffering administration playing in front of 9000 die hard fans and losing at home to Doncaster Rovers.

It depends how you look at it. In the relegation season we had 27 points from our first 21 games (1.29 points per game). Over the next 16 games with Roy M. in charge we took just 12 more points (0.75 points per game). So, over the 37 games under Roy M. we took a total of 39 points (1.05 points per game) but most of these came in the first half of the season.
For the last 9 games of the season with Rico in charge we took 8 points (0.89 points per game). Still relegation form (obviously) but statistically an improvement on the previous 16 games. Remember also that it was Roy's failure to bring in another striker after Folan departed and Ward was then injured that really messed us up. I'm not saying Rico was blameless but it clearly wasn't entirely his fault - he inherited a team with relegation form, low morale and a depleted strike force. He failed to turn that round but unless Roy M. gave him more freedom than most assistant managers he inherited a situation that wasn't entirely of his own making so it doesn't seem fair to say that he took us down as though no-one else was responsible in any way.
And as an after thought, Rico had 9 games = 19.6% of the season to save us, Shearer has 8 games = 21.1% of the season to save Newcastle. So, in broad terms, they both took over with about one-fifth of the season left.

1) mate this is absolute crap, Are you a Manu fan by any chance, He didnt want to sign for those c*nts ! Its almost ironic that manu fans get upset when players dont want to sign for them, like how dare he reject Manu !
Shearer played for pride for his own home town club and has become an absolute legend ! it may not matter how many trophies he won or did not win, he will have a statue of him instead !
Rudd Gullit was wrong to drop him, against sunderland on the brink of relegation, if i recall they lost that game and the fans called for his head !
2) Is this bit any way truthful ! i doubt it, Bellamy hated Shearer and vice versa, im surprised he want Bellamy to stay.
3) Turned his back on England ? , this is almost laughable ! his record speaks for itself, there is always a time when a player gets too old and has to hang up his boots and let others take his place,
Scholes did it, so they were able to continue their form at club level.
4) that was legendary, any other England fan would be feeling the same thing !
I think Newcastle fans are the most loyal and very passionate, i doubt they would flee a sinking ship
if they are unfortunate to go down, they will have a chance to re build and bounce back up into the prem !
Shearer is a fan, and is probably very drunk off his town club going into decline !
So good luck to him.
SHEARER SHEARER SHEARER !

Good analysis of what actually happened - as opposed to the 'gutless, spineless' contribution above from guess who.
What killed us off was the absence of a decent striker after Ward was injured. The rest of the team was adequate for the division, the defence in particular having a decent season. They were sadly lacking in morale by the time Rico took over, but with no goals going in it's no wonder. They certainly didn't go down without a fight, but it was doomed without a decent striker and, as Roy Mac found out, they just aren't available at that stage of the season.
