The wife floored me with a sporting question the other night, how come professional boxers can't compete in the olympics when pro's from football, basketball, tennis, ice hockey and presumably golfers in brazil 2016, can?

Depends on the sports federations.
Boxers have to apply to be a professional. Once they do they leave the juristriction of the amateur governing bodies.

So all the other sports I mentioned, football, basketball, tennis, ice hockey have amateur governing bodies? That's why they can compete in the olympics?
