Non League Day - Matlock Town & Beyond

I just wanted to thank those Spireites fans who came to watch Matlock Town this weekend or any other non-league side for that matter to celebrate Non-league day. We saw a fantastic boost in our gate giving us an attendance of 729 and I know I saw a lot of friendly faces from Chesterfield had made the trip over which is great that our two clubs and sets of supporters can continue to share such a fantastic friendship.
It's a shame that a postponement didn't allow you to have your own game on NLD and I know you naturally want to get back into the football league sooner rather than later but I hope you are at least enjoying some new grounds and a few advantages that come with non-league football.
It's great to see your recent upswing in form and I wish you all the best for your upcoming matches. I would love for us to meet in a cup, hopefully the FA Trophy or Derbyshire Senior Cup draws allow this.
Cheers,
James Griffiths

A pleasant place to play, but from a personal point of view not a happy hunting ground

No more Matlock CC and no more Chesterfield Barbarians and Ashover CC in their present guises. Sad what's happening in local cricket but inevitable I guess.

Just smacks a lot of the right on trendy ‘real’ fan bible that states you must feign pith for any league club in financial trouble, you must love AFC Wimbledon and hate MK Dons, basically any of the fans United type bull! Usually started by some hypocritical Brighton fans and a load of nonsense!

I think it totally depends on how you look at for Matlock Town it's a chance to get the kinds of publicity that we wouldn't normally be that on radio or via the local press as the "big boys" aren't playing, a chance to shine a bit of a spotlight on the club and a chance to engage with fans who perhaps have become disillusioned with the full-time game for whatever reason. It will honestly amaze you how many people in Matlock who I speak to and when they ask me what I do and I tell them "oh I spout nonsense on twitter and try to avoid a telling off for Matlock Town FC" then their eyes widen and go "What, Matlock Town have a football team?". We had four junior sides yesterday attend and take part in a half time penalty shootout with Matlock Town goalkeeping coach Steve Shuttleworth in goal (Told him every pen he let in then his wages get docked a tenner to which he replied "can you dock from zero?"), now if just a handful of those young lads and lasses come back for future games then it's an investment in the clubs future.
Nationally, NLD raises money for Prostate Cancer UK and opens doors for some fans who think they can't afford to go watch a game in person due to the costs. It's become so popular that now France & Germany this year are having their own non-league-day and that opens scope for the future for maybe a three countries groundhop weekend. We are at a time where we are seeing more and more non-league teams go under or be backed by big money backers, most non-league sides survive on the goodwill of volunteers, in an age where less and less people want to get their hands dirty and are happy to sit in front of their television then anything that gets the word out can only be positive and it's proven that it gives a spike to attendance so I'm all for it.

Or just clubs that rely on volunteers to survive after a bit of much needed extra revenue

Can’t see how you can feel patronised unless you support a non league club - hang on, wait a minute!
