I remember saying to my dad after selling Folan that it could be the worst thing the club did this season, but we needed the money. We have struggled ever since the sale and also before that when Hurst went back to Sheff U and then out to Scunthorpe....
The money gained could soon be lost in gate revenue next season as instead of Leeds we get Macclesfield

Sell your best player with a sell on clause attatched and then spend £100k on a replacement striker who unluckly got injured straight away, then fail to bring in someone on loan when it's so so desperate that you need someone. Fail to score enough goals to win games, then sack the manager who has resulted to this.

The Ward injury as far we can guess has been a huge factor in our recent failure but not so great as the loss of Folan who was surely going to hit 20 goals. I wonder what the price of relegation is compared with the fee we got for Folan.

i believe reports at the time of the "undisclosed" fee that a sell on cluase of 15% had been agreed.

I remember getting abuse by all (again ) when I state that the Folan deal wasn't as good as every one seemed to think it was! How is 500K for a fast/ powefull striker with an eye for goal good business? plus we have to pay Leeds a slice! I said it wasn't a bad deal but it was never the great deal every one made out!
It's as simple as this (if we had kept Folan we would have stayed up (his goals would have been enough!) - If we go down we have basically let him go for NOTHING! and still have to cough up to Leeds!
OK there may have been a release clause and this is sort of different! But still not the great deal everybody was talking about 500K for a decent striker - in comparrison the 100K we spent on Jamie is more like 2 million to a premiership club!

This season we're now going on about how we've sold a decent striker that could make the difference in staying up/going down!
The loss of Hurst (leading assist maker in the division when he went back to Sheff Utd) and Folan have been the key contributors to where we are now.

I would be very suprised if there was not such a clause saying that any club offering £500k could speak to him. Folan's release clause could have been negotiated by him/his agent at whatever price he liked - he knew he had the club over a barrel as he could go for nothing later on. £500k is a fair price for him and the club imo for a relatively unproven L1 striker.
