My first journey to work in Russia was on a train for four and a half days straight, in mid-winter.

Now with the diplomatic relations so poor and Boris by extension comparing Russia with Nazi Germany (a sure red rag) and May trying to rally Europe against them, I'd give the whole thing a very wide berth.
The government has raised the stakes, the diplomatic staff have been slashed in a XXX for tat process - they should take it to the logical conclusion and seriously pressure the FA to call the whole thing off
From a pure football aspect putting politics and corruption aside - Russia was a valid choice, Qatar was just stupidity
Hope you're right about Putin not wanting his World Cup spoiled by a few hooligans. Contrast that with what a Russian government official said after his boys 'gave a good account of theirselves' in France. There was a programme on TV last year showing how their 'fans' are preparing by going to training camps, fighting each other, plus a strict regime of healthy eating and no alcohol, yeah I can just see them giving it a nice 'Dobre Utre' before kicking the ###### out of anyone wearing the cross of St. George.
My advice, stay away.

It was my first journey, from Moscow over to Chita in eastern Siberia where I had taken a teaching job on 100 quid per month (good wage, locally). The trains are safer in third class, which is open, than second, with its closed compartments. Most Russians are stand-offish to strangers but very hospitable once the ice is broken. Drinking beer bought from babushki at stations passes the time (or vodka and fish for the locals). I had no computer, no. Toilets were the worst part.

With their safety record it’s probably better than an internal flight on some rickety old aircraft!!

Indeed. I have flown on those old Antonovs (enter via the rear fuselage) and it's disconcerting having air hiss past your ear from a badly-sealed window at 30,000 feet and watching the stewardesses struggle to pull a trolley up over the joins between the metal boards in the aisle. Plus, most of the maintenance staff will be heavy drinkers (seriously).
