I'd like to get such an "eleven" for the book.
So, then - World Cup winners. competitive and friendly matches, at any level:

Banksie, of course;
Charlton for Man U youth team.
Stiles for Man U reserves (or Preston, 74-5?)
Ray Wilson (Huddersfield Reserves, or Oldham, 69-70.)
Alan Ball (Blackpool Reserves? Blackpool 80-81? Bristol Rovers 82-3?)
Hunt (Liverpool Res, or Bolton, 71-2?)
Martin Peters for sheff U in 80-81?

We only need to find a connection for Cohen, Jack Charlton, Hurst and Moore (although two of those have come as a manager...)

Did Laurent Blanc ever play for the French World Cup winners?
Was Ardlies in the Spurs side that played a friendly here in 85-6?

Did Malaga have anyone of note in their side?

Other top players in addition to those already listed: Who, who for, and in a competitive match or friendly?

Yes, and Barthez also played here in that friendly. Remember Blanc kissing his head before games in '98. In the same game, they had P Neville, Roy Keane, Kieran Richardson, Forlan (first goal in English football) and van Nistelrooy. Some of their youngsters included Jimmy Davis (RIP) and Danny Webber.

I remember going to a Man Utd reserve game at saltergate, probably vs. Sheff Utd reserves, early 90's. A few more youngsters playing in that one - Neville (x2), Beckham, Scholes, Butt... that's about all I can remember, but they didn't turn out too bad!

I think Gordon Banks, Nat Lofthouse, Derek Kevan, amongst others played in a join testimonial for Dave Blakey & Ron Powell mid 60's
Derbyshire is Derbyshire
Yorkshire is Yorkshire

Never the twain shall meet.

Are you suggesting a 'best player from Country X to have played at the rec'?. That would be rate interesting.

England - Banks
N Ireland - Best.
Italy - Di Canio, Ravenelli ?
Germany - Hitzelburger?
Argentina - Forlan
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Wales - Billy Meredith, on "that" Man City programme

I'll start you off: Afghanistan - Errrrrr

The closest I can come up with is that Azam Ayoubi is a apparently an 18 year old at Barnet. Have we played them at youth level recently? He's not in the main squad so I presume he's still a scholar.

I've scored a winner on Saltergate in the late 90's and also had the priviledge to play in a game with the likes of Newton, Madden, O Neil, Morris, Waller, Rogers, I even nutmegged Mark Jules but then put the ball high in to the kop with the goal gaping!!

Good to play with a few legends, I had to settle for a former scottish u23 player as my strike partner and the odd celebrity, the opposition keeper being on bbc tv almost every night nowadays....

I take your point, but I bet there arn't very many countries that wouldn't get a candidate. All the Caribbean islands, all of Europe, all of South America.

Tibet?

Who was that South African international that played for QPR in the 60's?. I got his autograph.

I think Jack Charlton played at the Rec in 1960, against us in the League Cup.

Wasnt being facetious, in fact I spent most of the afternoon looking through Albanian players trying to see if there was any likely candidates, all I came up with was Lorik Cana and Rudi Vata. After that I had to do some work :(

didn't he make his MU debut here? I seem to remember that the central league programme for the game is rather valuable.

Best definitely made his Central League debut at Saltergate on 26/08/1963.
This fact is confirmed in the programme for the return match at Old Trafford played on 02/09/1963.
