Diagnoses of neurological conditions have risen manly due to increased awareness. I was diagnosed with autism in 1979 at the age of 10 when ignorance of all conditions of that nature was rife, meaning that people were very often labelled as badly behaved or unintelligent. Of course there will be elements of people who use it to their advantage, as is true with anything else. Generally speaking though, the struggles are real. Whether it’s ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia or Dyspraxia, functioning in a world designed for neurotypical people can be exhausting, often leading to difficulties gaining and keeping employment. That’s real life for many people. I consider myself to be lucky to function well despite the difficulties I’ve experienced.
